I have a sneaking suspicion that I'm probably not the only guy here in the same position.

Any help would be appreciated!
The first step is to ignore the advice of others to eat less meat and drink less beer. Lets be serious, if it was that easy you wouldn't be in this situation. We'll save the protein shake talk for the other threads! And Light beer? That's hardly an option!

Now the gym... of course you find it hard to go, it's boring and generally no fun! Does anyone really like going to the gym?

My solution, more sports! Seeing as you're still on the meat and beer diet I'll assume you're reasonably young. So... take up a new exciting sport, or better yet? Lots of new exciting sports! Mountain Biking, Kayaking, Climbing, Hiking, Skiing, etc. It's all good! Now heres the best part... Once you start getting more involved and meeting more people you start drinking more beer as part of your work out!

ie, Meet buddies to go participate in said activity, have awesome time during activity, work up crazy hunger and thirst, head to pub to shoot the about activity while enjoying beer and burgers. Repeat 3-5 nights a week and weekends!

The best part? You'll be in great shape! Not, look at my 6% body fat bench twice my weight while I get tired 30 minutes into activity because I'm low on energy after having not eating shape... Instead you'll be in I can ride my bike/climb this mountain and ski all day without getting tired shape!

Now a warning...the gym goers here will discount my theory. This is based purely on jealousy! They're bitter that you'll be out having fun and drinking beer while getting in shape while they drink whey protein shakes and look at themselves in the mirror in the basement of some gym...

I've been straight-edge since long before my punk friends informed me what straight-edge was. For me, the issue isn't one beer. It's that for most people it rarely stops there. I've seen alcohol ruin too many families, including killing both my grandfathers. I just think it would be wrong to risk the great life that I have given how much it has scarred my family and I've seen where it has led far too many friends. I'm not against it the way Muslim's are... I have no problem being around alcohol... as I've said in other threads I was always the DD in university. Maybe "immoral" isn't right, but rather, for me, "unwise". I view it the same as marijuana... I'm for it being legal, if you can use it without abusing it all the power to ya, but it ain't for me.

In any case, I'll attempt to throw this back on topic by saying that exercise doesn't have to mean going to the gym. Some people can go torture themselves with hours in the gym and while I do do some cardio at the gym, it's not where I get most of my exercise. I'm from the east coast and during the summers I'd spend almost every day at the lake or in the really really big lake between Nova Scotia and England. I love the water, so for me I'm going swimming at least 3 times a week. It is so much easier to find something that you enjoy than to force yourself through a horribly grueling workout.

Actually, the above is the thesis of a recent piece in Time magazine called "Why Exercise Won't Make You Thin." There is some good and some bad in the article, but it's still an interesting read.

Go try a high protein low carb diet.

You'll be able to eat all the man foods but you'll have to drop all the bread, pasta, beer, and even sugar.

I can respect that. I already knew why you don't eat meat from a prior conversation we had, but as to why you don't drink alcohol, I didn't know....until now.

I think the most important distinction is that while you take that stand, its important that you don't judge other people for drinking. I'm not saying that you do, in fact I think you're quite the opposite, but I've seen a few people who also refuse to drink alcohol, and just through their attitude they instantly degrade people who do.

If you're drinking beer, switch to this:

Vitamin G: lower in calories, higher in iron, more taste, more filling. More manly.

Meat, even fatty meat is not a problem with weight gain. It can however be a problem for circulatory health. And all meat or meat rich diet usually ends up neglecting a lot of other things you need too.

Beer does not help at all. If you insisted on consuming a lot of beer, you'll need to work it off, then just eat sesnibly around that I guess.

There's better dietician advice already in here, but a lot of it is just common sense. Just thought I'd chime in on the meat thing.

Oh yeah, and soft drinks are probably the most fattening thing you can eat. It's like drinking liquid sugar. If you drink those too, eliminate them before the beer and you might see results just there.

Hi Guys thanks for all the great advice & reccomendations.

after reading some of the posts I should have inicluded that:
I eat bison, a leaner meat.
I use rice pasta as opposed to a regular starchy pasta.
Drink skim milk.
Walk the dog twice a day.
and bread is a major part of my diet.

I think eating more veggies is probably the best solution.

I have decided to cut out all drinks with sugar. I'm down to water and milk, and beer :-/. (for 2 weeks).
