Really? Is this based on living there, visiting or just what you think you've heard about the place? Regardless, I disagree.
There are lots of areas of Oakland that are great... plus it's near the bay/ocean, SF, and all of Northern California's other amenities.
Wainwright isn't great, but some of the nearby wholes take the cake - most notably, Irma, AB.

In terms of places I've been, Sudbury easily takes the cake.
For big cities, me and my buddies did a massive U.S. road trip a few years ago(16 states in one month) and Washington D.C. was a frickin hole. The rich areas are nice, as well as the Capital area obviously. But sooo much ghetto. I was also amazed at how close the run-down areas were to the multi-million dollar estates, I'd say no more than a mile or two.

I second this.
In terms of big cities? Winterpeg definitley has to be up there. Didn't really like Bratislava either.

My face is a bum!
|
^ When driving from Toronto to Buffalo at dusk my friend woke up to see the beatiful waterfront of Hamilton as we were on the bridge... and by that I mean smoke stacks belching pollution and giant open flames... He asked if we were in Iraq. Given the surroundings it was a valid question, but a quick check of the map told us it was just Hamilton.

One of those places you are just grateful to be alive on departure.
Thank God I never had to leave the bus or train station. That bad.

Fort St. John
Was going to agree with Fort Nelson, but at least it's pretty close to the Northern Rockies.
Fort St. John is just gross.
2nd place: North Bay, Ontario
3rd: Moncton, NB... only time I had a good time in Moncton was at the Stones show.

Hamilton. I haven't spent a lot of time in the city, but I was absolutely shocked by the amount of litter I witnessed in one park in one half-hour. And it could have been a nice park. But people would just finish eating their McDonalds or Tim Hortons, and then just get up and leave their refuse on the bench or on the ground. It wasn't just one or two people, it was more than half the people who came through the park. (Of course, it's too small a sample to fairly base a city on, but I've never seen anything that comes close anywhere else in Canada).
Oh, Ulaan Baatar is a hole, too (even though I praised rural mongolia in the other thread).

Naples, Italy.
I cant say enough bad things about this place, we went there right after Rome, and I thought Rome was bad, it cant even compare to the dingy, mafia-infested craphole that is Naples.

1) Fort St. James, BC (birthplace of Jim Playfair, but a total dive). I do give them credit for having a big Flames logo graffitied on one of their bridges though...
2) Pikanjikum, ON.... I had to do some environmental work up there. It's like going into a 3rd world country.
3) Prince George, BC - I hate this place..lol.

In AB for places I've been, I'm going with Lac La Biche. I should be thankful I never had to go to Fort Mac I guess. (Sorry to Fort Mac'ers, just haven't heard anything good about it.)
Some parts of California are really really dumpy, I can't believe there was a real estate craz for some of these dumpy houses.

Yep that was me...Actually went when the article was put out in Playboy. Lasted 5 minutes and got the heck out.
My worst place is Buffalo, New York...what a DUMP. Makes Hamilton look pretty.

You might be right, but I hate Moncton. No offense dude, the people are fine, I just really don't like that city. It manages to find a way to make me feel both claustrophobic and lonely at the same time. So... much... nothing. And I loathe that ugly tower thing with all the satellite dishes on it.
Small town Alberta is something I am just discovering. Haven't spent enough time anywhere for it to annoy me as much as Moncton does. IE the gopher museum in Torrington is cute to me still, not a pathetic cry for attention.
