I use logmein as well, it's free for personal use, and I don't have to worry about firewalls and such, so it's great for your work PC or other places you don't have access to play around with firewalls.

For multiple copies of files, look into Dropbox or Syncplicity, keeps files synchronized across multiple computers. Free for smaller amounts of files (2GB).

I have 2 laptops and a desktop. My desktop runs XP pro and my laptops run Home. I can use Windows RDC and RealVNC to connect to my desktop from my laptops, but I can't seem to do the reverse. I understand Home doesn't allow you to log in with RDC, which is why I can't go from my desktop to any of my laptops. Is it the same with VNC? Or is there some kind of port setting I'm missing?

If you're looking to keep files synced between multiple computers, you may want to check out Microsoft's Live Sync, Live Mesh, or Skydrive.

They are all great consumer products from Microsoft that are poorly marketed (as usual) and all three services do some similar things just to confuse you.

Here's an article that explains them. The last paragraph is the most useful:
http://www.labnol.org/internet/compa...skydrive/6166/

Or you could just buy a couple of Macs and click the Share Screen button.

I simply need a system that allows me to log in to my parents three computers, in three different homes. What system allows that?

Logmein Free would do that, without having to worry about configuring firewalls or anything like that.

The only thing I don't know is if there's a limit to the number of PC's on one free account. You might have to get them to sign up for individual accounts and then know the passwords for each one.

I bit the bullet and bought the logmein app for my iPhone last night. A little pricey at $30, but well worth it. I'm now connected to my home mac and work mac at all times.

Anybody thinking about putting up $ for anything might as well try the free logmein service, if it isn't for you then you haven't lost anything. Just to avoid confusion logmein is a free download on your mac or pc, the iPhone app is what costs money.

Anybody who is concerned with keeping files synced across computers NEEDS to try dropbox (www.getdropbox.com). It is also free an works on all operating systems and even works across them (I share files between mac and pc all the time).

If posssible can you run a packet sniffer on your home machine. I am curious as to the level of security on the logmein app.

If the scurity is any descent, I will walk over to Rogers at lunch and repalce my Razr3 with an iPhone.

^^I have been looking at LogMeIn today after so many people have recommended it. Looks like it uses 256-bit ssl.

Logmein is great. Use it to help fix family and friend's computers, saves me driving over there for every little question.

+1: Dropbox is fantastic.

If you're at all wondering how you're going to deal with synchronizing files or sharing files between multiple devices (including pictures w/ gallery functionality) then this is a great answer. Files are even read-only available on my iPhone. I would also strongly advise checking out the demo on the dropbox page to learn what the system can really do.

Absolutely ... as soon as somebody tells me what a packet sniffer is and how to run one.

The one thing about Syncplicity that is better than Dropbox is you can specify folders, rather than having just one folder be synchronized.

Great for me if I want to have code and documents and other things synchronized between computers.

Wireshark: Download - Packet sniffer

I also use Dropbox and love it. I tried Syncplicity and I can't remember why but I didn't find it to be what I needed.

update....

I bit the bullet and upgraded my host computer (office) from XP Home to Pro to have the "Remote Desktop" capability. It sounded like the simplist solution and with zero monthly fees, most cost effective.

Well, I have followed every instruction, step by step and I cannot get it to work.

So now, I am back to where I started... considering "Go to my PC" or "Log me in". They both offer one month free, so I just might try them both.

The file sync that a few people have commented on would be perfect for my situation. It likes both gotomypc and logmein have a variation of that. Does anyone have any comments as to why they would use a separate program for sync'ing?

BTW thanks for all the comments... they have been very helpful.

Logmein has a completely free version, if you sign up you get a one month trial, but if you just let it expire it'll roll over to the free version. Fewer features, but if remote control is the point then it works great.

Cause I hate paying for stuff, I think logmein's file syncing costs $$, where Dropbox and Syncplicity are free for 2GB.

If your host computer is behind a firewall then you'll have to forward port 3389 to that host computer.
