I read somewhere that Phelps has ADD and marijuana does apparently have some medicinal use for treating ADD... but that doesn't even look like him in the picture imo.

Who cares? Didn't a recent study show that over 50% of Canadians have admitted to at least smoking pot once? He's 23 years-old and visiting a college party. It's not like he dropped out of college, stopped showering, and started showing up at Phish concerts.

who cares about this?
I'd say the entire entourage of agents, coaches and publicists that attached themselves to Phelps during and since the Olympics.
Going to have to go into a whole new direction with the marketing now. The clean cut athelete image will not sell anymore.
Perhaps this makes him more real in the eyes of some, but there is an entire infrastructure of marketing and endorsements that will come crashing down because of this. He just gave companies looking to get out of their contract due to the economy a reason to walk.

Disagree.
The News of the World is a tabloid trash celebrity based newspaper, I admit.
However, having said that. They don't tend to print stories like this without some sort of due diligence having been taken to court in the past. They are also pretty decent when they put their mind to it at investigative journalism.
Their stories are "who cares" celebrity rubbish but (admittedly, they've screwed up a few) they're never far off the mark.

Perhaps the title should read: "Micheal Phelps caught with water pipe in hand"
Until we see certified drug test results, it is all hearsay.

I saw an article on Yahoo, that he has admitted it was him and apologized.
Give the kid a break, I think.
Anyone here that hasn't done something stupid that they regret?
It's unfortunate that people delight in catching someone famous doing something that's probably not appropriate.

For those that ask who cares....Michael Phelps cares. He's set for life with endorsements. This could jeopardize that, whether you think that's wrong or not is really irrelevant.
Phelps is going into damage control mode now to try and save his income.
Edit: I see Killer Carlson beat me to the punch.

Like a few have said, big deal. So the dude takes a break from training and lets loose with a couple bong hits. He's not killing anyone, and he has been in Olympic training mode for so long, I'm sure he never had a chance to be a teenager or a kid in University and just go wild for a bit.
I couldn't care less if athletes smoke dope or have a few drinks. Makes them more human than they usually seem.

Would you guys have the same "Who gives a crap" attitude if the picture was of him doing a line of coke, lighting a crack pipe or smiling at the camera with a needle in his arm?

Huge difference between a little weed and that stuff.
Add me to the "who gives a crap" crowd. He's a young man who had a hit off a bong, big deal.

He hasn't been removed from the Power Within conference here next month, so that's good news for him.

Considering weed isn't performance enhancing, this should not be a big deal at all.
I'd be more concerned about his excessive reported alcoholism. Much more of an issue IMO.

Few things:
- It is illegal. Whether you like it or agree with it, use of the herb is illegal in the US, just ask Ricky Williams.
- Much of the US is anti drug crazy (well the gov't is)
- he is famous for what he did (does), let's not loose site of that. Rightly or wrongly he is under a microscope. Even at 23 he should be smart enough to know about the dangers of doing this where it can be view, photographed and put on the net. BTW, 23 is not young.
Just my thoughts
