I second this, the loft suite is a pretty good bang for your buck, one of my favorite place to stay in Banff.

Eat at any of the fine restaurants listed.... and I agree Grizzly House is fun but not so romantic, if you want the fondue thing in a romantic setting both Banff Springs and Lake Louise have unreal fondue places (get ready to spend $250 on a meal for 2 though).

But if you really want to impress (and you should if you're trying to combine a birthday with valentines.... that isn't the way approach it... you want to oversell one but still celebrate the other....), rent a deluxe trapper's cabin at Baker Creek Chalets, about 20 minutes out of Banff.

You get a small, cozy "trapper's" cabin in the forest with a comfy queen bed, wood burning fireplace, jacuzzi tub for 2 (complete with surrounding mirrors), little fridge/part kitchen and bbq on your private deck (for breakfast -- bbq her bacon, hash browns, and scramble eggs on a griddle, serve with champagne and OJ, just before checkout) ...and all for about 300/night, comparable to Banff Springs/Rimrock/LL in price, but much more thoughtful.

Edit: Nevermind, didn't read the OP, just some of the stuff under. Baker Creek + Expensive Dinner = $600 night, and then some. But you could take her to the trapper's cabin and BBQ something, and spend the rest of the night in the jacuzzi..... 300 bones well spent.

I liked this hotel too... we did however get stuck in the stairwell when they were renovating it, and had to call to get let out! But other than that, the location was great, and the rooms were nice. Sunshine cards get a deal of $109 a night too,.

That is my favourite restaurant in Banff by far. It is a Fondue/Hot rock place.

A little different than a typical restaurant but it is very romantic. It is almost modelled like a seventies swingers type place but the food is incredible and you fondue it or use a hot rock right at your table. Very romantic and you can share each others food if your into that type of thing. They say it is a restaurant for lovers and hedonists.

They have all types of crazy things to try if you want like Buffalo, Alligator, Frogs legs, shark, deer, ostrich and a bunch of others or if you want to stick to Chicken and beef they have that as well.

Each table has a phone as well so if you get really bombed you can start calling all of the other tables and chatting with them, you can even call the washrooms and see how things are going for people in there. They even have a private room where nobody can see you. The one time we went there the waitress said that she would knock before coming in. She did knock and wait for us to say it was ok to enter everytime she came by. Don't know what usually goes on in that place.

If you get the main "feast" it is a good couple hours you will spend there and it all finishes with a chocolate fondue with Fruit.

Not your typical quiet candlelit romantic setting. More of a fun experience romantic type place. If your date is into that type of thigns she will love it.

Check it out.....
Definitely a great place. Expect to run a tab between $120 and $200 depending on how much one drinks or how exotic of fondue one gets. I feel its a wasted opportunity to go to a place like that and only order beef/chicken/pork... go for the exotic stuff, its totally worth it.

As for hotels... the Delta, Caribou Lodge are good. Ptarmigan is alright, but unless things have changed, the restaurant in the hotel stinks.

I hate Banff.
Crap food when you compare the quality with the exorbitant prices on everything.
