It is a grey area that is being monitored by the NHL and NHLPA.

It looks like is acceptable if it a trade is within a few days of being scratched for trade related reasons, but if we are talking weeks we will see a new rule about it if teams keep trying it.

Quote:
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said he plans to look into the influx of players being scratched from lineups for trade-related reasons and added that the topic will be discussed at next month's general manager meetings.

"We've seen this to an extent we haven't seen before," Bettman said at a press conference in Edmonton Monday night. "It's something we have to keep an eye on."

With the trade deadline on March 3, a number of teams have taken precautions to protect players from injuries by sitting them out of games. While some of those players have only been scratched for a single game before being traded — including Sam Lafferty in Chicago and Dmitry Orlov and Garnet Hathaway in Washington — others such as Jakob Chychrun in Arizona and Vladislav Gavrikov in Columbus have been sitting for multiple weeks without a deal in place yet.

While Chychrun has asked out of Arizona and will welcome a trade, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported on Monday's episode of 32 Thoughts: The Podcast that Gavrikov isn't happy that he's been out of the lineup since Feb. 14.

"We wondered if (Gavrikov) would return to the lineup Saturday against Edmonton, he did not. There's no indication he's going to play before the deadline on Friday," Friedman said. "If there's going to be an issue about this between the league and the players' association, I think Gavrikov is going to be at the centre of this because I don't think he accepts this, I think he wants to play."

Bettman said if the league determines the number of trade-related scratches is an issue, he would discuss it with the NHLPA. But, he added, "first we've got to decide whether or not it's a problem."

"We haven't seen it to this extent and it's something that we need to focus on as to whether or not it's a unique phenomenon for whatever reason this year, and whether or not it's a problem," Bettman said.

Sounds like just a maintenance break for Coleman, that its something minor. He has to be 100 percent to be traded.

The way he plays and blocks shots, it is a risk if he plays.
The PA might have a problem with that particularly since he's a pending UFA.
EDIT: Sorry people have already said this.

Injured players get traded all the time as long as the medical details aren't misrepresented.

See 2011 where Dean Lombardi claimed the Oilers misrepresented Colin Fraser's foot injury in the Ryan Smyth trade.

No, it is not "quite normal". Players don't get sat out until a deal is pretty much done but isn't finalized.

We all knew Iggy was being traded and I'm pretty sure he was pulled halfway through the game.

If a trade isn’t imminent. You don’t do that.

Some people here must have very little confidence in CC. He doesn’t need your help or advice. It’s under control.breathe, guys.

Also good luck telling an athlete to sit on the sidelines because they're healthy and possibly could get traded - even though he has term left.
I would hope GMs aren't dumb enough to let a guy sitting out games impact trade value.

as it turns out I was at Iggy's last game, in Chicago (he was traded the next day)

my recollection (confirmed by this data dive) was he played regularly that game including the 3rd period

Good idea, lets protect all the assets! No one plays, no one gets injured, no trade chips lost. Genius move, revolutionary even. They'll write books!

I remember a classmate of mine who was a Canucks fan telling me "You're losing your captain". I thought it was during the game that he said that but maybe not. I just remember not staying until the school closed because I was pretty bummed out even though it was expected.

On what grounds? Wouldn't it be the same as a healthy scratch?

come on now...everyone knows these are 3 of the Flames best players, are you suggesting they argue they are being healthy scratched for a month?
