Makes sense to me. Especially with the Coyotes dead, why not do this?

I get that, I do, because Winnipeg is a frozen wasteland from which there is no escape, I understand.
But why do you care?
I'm a huge Flames fan and I dont get all worked up about the Atlanta Flames. Partially because I'm a fan of 'The Team' not 'The Franchise' and partly because I am not affiliated in any way with hip-hop and choose not to be associated with Lil' Jon.

I think it’s funny they need talks to iron this out. How can this possibly be more than a five minute conversation?

They have to get the league statistician drunk enough to say yes. Otherwise it just gives him extra work for no extra money.

What is so hard to grasp about this beyond being pedantic and annoying? If the Calgary Flames moved, came back after a dozen years then yes I would like to have all that history, scoring titles, retired numbers etc etc be apart of our city again. There is zero to question about it, somethings don't need a "for why!"

Winnipeg is a great city with amazing culture, food, music, and arts. It has some of the best architecture in western Canada and a fascinating history. And its my home. So eff off.

Why would you care about the Atlanta part of the Flames? Do you understand how this analogy doesn't work? Like at all?
And why do I care? Because when I took my son to Winnipeg for a playoff game a couple years ago we walked past the Dale Hawerchuck statue and it filled me with pride telling him about at one point, our team had one of the best players on Earth. It's part of our shared cultural history as Winnipeggers.

Also, you do now: Hellebuyck when healthy is the best goalie in the world and a couple playoffs games that went south can't convince me otherwise.
It should be very simple. If the Flames left for 14 years, certainly Flames fans would want the records associated with Iginla, McDonald, etc. to stay in Calgary. Imagine number 12 and 9 hung in the rafters in Houston? It would be weird and it was weird for the Coyotes to do that.
NBA got it right (eventually) with the Hornets and if/when Seattle gets a team back, the new Sonics will share the history of the old Sonics. That's what makes sense, not Shawn Kemp's #40 and 1979 championship banner hanging in Oklahoma City.

Because that’s not the situation at all as it relates to Atlanta and Calgary. Imagine if the Flames moved and all the history with Lanny, Iginla and Kipper was celebrated at the new home. The Flames get an expansion team in 10 years and those players and their records are part of a different teams history.
It drives fans in Houston crazy that the Titans celebrate Earl Campbell and Bum Phillips and wear the Houston Oilers power blue retros on occasion. They are part of a Titans ring of honor.
So I totally get why this matters to WhiteOut. It’s because they are a fan of the “team” and the city it represents and not the legal entity. At least the Jets kept the name.
Imagine if Quebec ever got a team again and could not wear those beautiful unis.

Should the Ottawa Senators get their historical records back as well? The NHL did officially recognize them as a "reinstated" franchise and not just a straight expansion franchise with the caveat that the franchise records wouldn't carry over. Although funnily enough, they do have one retired jersey number from the old era.

The annals of history need to truly reflect the scope and scale of Winnipeg's losing ways and overall sucking.

Nothing stops you from talking about the old Jets, but saying those records are the records of the present franchise just ignores reality. What do you do with Shane Doan? Does Winnipeg now “own” his scoring records? It’s a silly waste of time.

Silly waste of time is over the top for me.
If you're my age and grew up in the Hawerchuk era you'd want those records on the team, along with recent records of players you follow now.
Maybe it's time to assign records to where they happen ... Doan in Arizona doesn't count. Hawerchuk and Selanne in Winnipeg do.
I personally don't care about the Atlanta records for Calgary all that much, but I'd hate to lose the 80s here if the team moved and then came back.

It’s silly and a waste of time because you can easily look up those records without having them be “official”. There’s no need to alter reality because the team which returned happened to get the same name. It was a different franchise. Shame Doan played with the same teammates (some of whom played in Winnipeg longer than him) and under the same coaches, managed by the same management.
I bet Jets fans aren’t going to erase Blake Wheeler’s first season, or the numbers for Bogosian, Ladd, Byfuglien, Little, etc. It just makes things messy.
The league has way more important things to deal with.

Not for me.
I wouldn't want to look up the Jets record for goals by a right wing, and then have to head over to Utah / Arizona list and see where the answer lies.
That sucks.

Well, if the records are by franchise, you could see it pretty easily.
The two Jets teams are two completely different franchises. They just grabbed the same name as an older team.
I mean, no one is claiming King Clancy’s numbers in Ottawa these days, just because he played for a team with the same name in Ottawa years before.
