Gutsy move if it's true, but Conroy and co made it clear that spots weren't guaranteed. Pelts sadly didn't do anything to earn an opening day spot over Klapka, Honzek or Coronato. If he does get claimed I'll definitely miss his golden retriever personality and good vibes

Earn the damn job then! I don’t like the message that it would have sent to either Klapka or Honzig after they went out and did what the team asked. I hope he clears, but if not it’s on him!

I'd say closer to zero. Montreal will pick him up

We have a silly over-filled group of forwards.

There's some risk in this decision, but I'm not really sure how much. Pelletier was a later 1st round pick with no real standout skill, and as an undersized player...I certainly haven't seen anything that makes him stand out.

That aside, it's still silly that we have the group of forwards we do and we're picking some of those players over the youth and (limited?) upside of Pelletier.

Kevin Rooney is a non-factor in the long-term outlook of this team. Even if you go back to free agency, Mantha and Lomberg were signed to what end? Should have been another spot for a young player.

This move strikes me as the Flames overvaluing this idea of being 'competitive' every night at the expense of growing a team from the ground up. Losing a couple more games a year isn't going to nuke the 'culture', but winning a few more games will nuke the potential that the end state of this roster actually carries.

Pelletier? Likely an inconsequential player...but no more inconsequential than some of the other riff raff this bloated roster is carrying, so it's a bummer to see them side with a Rooney rather than a Pelletier.

Klapka could be the next Walker Duehr if it turns out for him, or Connor Mackey. You don’t let guys like that slip through your fingers.

So can we assume that Sharangovich isn't hurt badly? Otherwise they could have just kept Pelletier up right?

@royle9, why would they do this instead of taking a late round pick for him? Getting something for a player. > losing a player for nothing

Next option would be Honzek, if he is hurt IMO

I’m sure they would have if they could have swung a deal in a short timeframe. However, the team on the other end is likely one of few teams who could put a claim in on a waiver…. And they would know that’s why you’re moving him.

Most teams would have to put a separate player through waivers to accept this trade.

I like Pelts but he didn't really earn a roster spot. I don't think it's bad asset management , it's just the end result of how camp shook down. If he gets claimed I'm okay with it, the Flames are stuffed to the gills with good winger prospects that will constantly putting a player like Pelts on the bubble over the next 2 or 3 seasons.

Ultimately, it's on Pelts to earn a spot and he didn't.

Obviously they were offered a pick and decided to take nothing instead

It’s not like other GMs have no clue what’s going on around the league. It had to be known that he was passed on the depth chart here and there wasn’t room for him on the big club anymore.

I would be surprised Montreal doesn’t put in a claim. Liane’s out long term. The kids French Canadian. Looking at their lineup he looks to be favourable compared to Emil Hienemen, I’d say.

Low risk high reward. SJ, Chicago, Columbus, Anaheim. Only takes one of these teams to say ‘sure, we’ll roll the dice’.

I’d say it’s a hell of a lot closer to 50/50 he gets claimed and if he doesn’t that shows what his stock is around the league and all these posters paddling on about ‘assets management’ don’t really know what they’re talking about.

The guy had an injury riddled season and we are writing him off because he hasn't bounced back in one pre-season. I can't see the harm in sending Honzek down to give Pelletier a good run if games to see if he gets back on track.

Maybe he never makes it, but this is not a Matthew Phillips situation where he guy has been a pro for many years and the org really knew what they had.

How many of those did they get 0 assets back for? I think Fata and Daniel were concussion issues IIRC.

If Pelletier had not been a first round pick would this be big news? 6 years since he was drafted and he's yet to earn a spot on what's at best a submediocre team. He's a replacement level player with a brand name that makes him bad value.

So he couldn’t crack the lineup on what’s likely the what, 28th place team in the league? Hard time getting worked up about this but I know we can do it if we try. Sucks for him but some time on the Wranglers should help him out

I think Honzek was staying regardless but if Sharangovich started the year on the IR they could have kept Pelletier and even Cooley.

The list of wingers coming that'll be burying Pelts at future camps:
Misa
Gridin
Basha
Suniev
Stromgren
Coronato

Tough sledding for Pelts IMO.
