Barrie + Kuzmenko on the PP this year should guarantee we don't see the same embarrassing output rate as last year.

Plus not having Andersson appear on the PP should increase his value, as well.

Yup, good stuff with the alternatives available on D. The Flames finally have an actual threat on the point on the PP. Can't even remember who the last player was!

Never hurts to have veteran D on the team. If he sucks he will be pushed out and if he plays great he will be traded. Shown he can still play.

We might even get the equivelent of the Okhotiuk 5th rounder back.
Seriously though, hope he has a great season with CGY, and is a good part of the room. If he's one of the guys that can keep things light in a rebuild season I'm all for it.

A decent chance there's no deadline buyers, in which case his positive influence in the room may be prove valuable.

I would have preferred not to sign Barrie and use that ice time to cycle young defencemen through for development...
... but on the other hand, Flames have had an enormous amount of success with mid-round picks (3rd or later). So instead of worrying about development time, I will just focus that this signing will lead the Flames to draft the next:
Wolf - 7th round
Pospisil - 4th round
Fox - 3rd round
Mangiapane - 6th round
Gaudreau - 4th round
Ferland - 5th round
Brodie - 4th round
Prust - 3rd round
Lombardi - 3rd round
Moss - 7th round
Anderson - 3rd Round
Lydman - 4th round
Titov - 10th round
Svelha - 4th round
Hoglund - 10th round
Reichel - 4th round
Fleury - 8th round
Hull - 6th round
Suter - 9th round
Makarov - 12th round
Loob - 9th round
The more bullets in the chamber, the more likely the Flames are of actually drafting another superstar/franchise player/important depth player that leads to success.

Totally ok with this. Flames need stop gaps for the next few years, if he can contribute positively to the PP and help out the younger guys and the locker room, I'm all for it. Free asset that, if it doesn't work out, doesn't really cost you anything.

I didn’t think he looked bad in training camp. Interested to see how they might use him. Whether he’s a regular or a gap filler.

I'm ok doing this sign-and-flip this year, but it should probably be the last year that Craig goes this route. Even this year you're arguably sending a youngster to the AHL when they could stay up, but it's a coin flip. Fast forward 12 months and signings like Barrie (and Mantha) will only block younger players that can play in the NHL.

Kuzmenko Kadri Huberdeau Barrie
Who else completes the #1 PP unit? If this unit is halfway successful it could go a long way into conning some other GM to take Kadri or Huberdeau at the end of the years.

Solid move. Will get PP time and nothing wrong with some veteran leadership on the backend.
