To be clear I don't think they should do the big ceremony this year - that would be too soon.
But I would want a bit of a quiet and somber event where they raise the banner to the rafters and honor his memory.
Then as somebody else mentioned maybe do a big bigger ceremony once they open Scotia Place and some time has passed.

I don't think this is the time to make this sort of decision. In this moment, it feels disrespectful to discuss the cons of retiring 13

Agreed, his parents and wife should play a huge role in whatever decisions are made, but I do very much hope that they are at the very least given the options of being welcomed bad the Saddledome to honour their sons.
As the Flames, I think I would offer them in order of preference;
1) Oct 9th
2) Dec 3rd
3) Any night they want
Again with his families consent, I think whatever happens, having his name in the rafters somehow would be good to see.
If they are not ready to make a decision on that by the end of September, I think it would be worth while to put out a statement that they are working with the family to find the best way to honour their memories.

A jersey retirement is probably one of the last things on their minds.

Tbhall due respect to Johnny and his family but I do not think we should retire his jersey. If he had signed with us no question it would be retired

Ya I’d like His family to have input. Maybe they’d feel honoured to have someone else wear it. Maybe they’d prefer some sort of charity or scholarship. Maybe a memorial or statue would be more appropriate. But I’m certainly not opposed to retiring it.

listen to the Ryan Leslie interview on fan 960 this morning, and you will hear about how much Johnny loved being here, and how much he loved this organization.

I remember when they asked Coleman if he pitched to Johnny to stay, and he said he did and he told him his jersey would be in the rafters. Never would have imagined that it would be like this.

Regardless if it becomes official or not, I don't think any player will ever ask to wear 13 in a Flames uniform again, just as a respect thing.

There are no cons. Just questions of if—if the family would prefer the organization didn't—and when.

Could the Forever a Flame program be more appropriate at this time? Especially if no one wants to figure out the logistics of a full blown jersey retirement right now at this sad time.

personally no (partly because of my distaste for FAF)
just don't allocate the jersey (ever IMO) while a decision is made on timing for the right thing to do

It's to early and raw right now I think.
We also need input from his family and what they feel is right as well.
Best thing to do is just not give anyone the #13 and work with his family when it feels appropriate.

Just wait and retire his jersey when appropriate. It doesn’t matter how he left

I think the team will wear a #13 patch on their jerseys or helmets for this season. Maybe even #13 on the ice somewhere.
Don't think there will be a jersey retirement this season. That's too raw. I think time has to pass and they will honor it with time. Don't think anyone will wear it now though so it would be unofficially retired.

Oddly enough they debated this on the fan Wednesday...I was a hard no but obviously this changes everything.
