I had a nearly identical experience.
The group I was managing while I was still in Calgary were all women. We went through the DEI thing so started using 'Hey Team' in my emails to the group. My lead brought it up in our weekly meeting saying it sounded odd and what happened to guys? I told them it was from the DEI training that they were all about to go through and I was trying to do my part. In the end they much preferred guys to team, all or folks and threatened me with death if I used gals, or even worse ladies.
So they were my guys.
