If ever Comtois wasn't involved in the 2018 world junior event I wouldn't mind seeing him brought in on a PTO.

Yeesh, good point. Perhaps that’s why he hasn’t been signed…

There is something there for sure, whether it's that he only wants to play for a few teams or that he is involved its weird that a player like him hasn't been signed yet.

Yeah I don't mind PTOs
What has to change is how the veteran and top prospects get handled. Last fall the Flames (Sutter) had the veteran team in Calgary playing against AHL teams, and the prospects on the road with no vets to play with but PTOs playing full NHL squads.
Made it almost impossible for a young player to do enough to stay.
Have to think that changes this fall or they wouldn't be talking about youth infusion.
The vet rule ruined the preseason. It used to be very young squads playing against each other to start the schedule and building confidence.

I believe Conroy spoke about PTOs not too long ago. I may be totally out to lunch here, but I believe that he said:
"Not planning on signing any (or many??), and that veterans on PTOs often out-shine most rookies/young players in preseason, but as the season progresses, it is often the other way around."
I am completely paraphrasing here, but I somehow seem to remember him saying something very close to that on one of his interviews somewhere.

I also can't remember the exact wording, but what I took from it is that there will be 1-2 PTOs as insurance. Conroy also mentioned that he could always make a trade/sign players if the prospects fumble the opportunity.
I'm pretty sure it was the Robb Kerr interview on Just A Game.

I hope we don’t have any brand name PTOs because a portion of the fanbase fixates on them and then gets all cranky when they don’t get a spot that they didn’t even come close to earning. A la Sonny Milano last year.

PTOs should be held to a different standard under this management/coaching staff which ought to be interesting to see. They'll be here to push the kids more than anything, and probably be under the impression that they're auditioning for the rest of the league, not so much the Calgary Flames, though the chance exists they could grab a spot.

As far as PTOs go for CGY, I hope they're more like a Milano type PTO than an aging vet.
Younger players needing to prove they belong in the show. It's not a big ask and PTOs are zero risk. If they earn a spot they earn a spot. I want our young players to compete for their spots, not gift wrapped for them. Competition breeds success.

Nick Grossmann seriously scarred me against PTOs.
Like... he was "the good ship Grossmann" even in training camp, and then just got destroyed against the Oilers in one of the first regular season games and never played again.
Hard to believe it was already 7 years ago. Maybe I'm remembering it wrong, but it was just "holy cow, what the F are they thinking?"

Seem to remember a wrinkle to the Grossman story where they signed him to exactly the cap space they had left to maximize their cap space for LTIR later in the season.
That only works if the guy can play though ... and he wasn't up for even 7th defenseman duty.

I don't even know who would count as a high profile PTO this year.
I doubt Tatar comes here.
The best before date club: Kessel? Parise? Stall? Bailey? Stasny?
The no Q.O club: Gregor? Comtois? Puljujarvi? Bear?
The pickings are pretty slim. I could see Brett Ritchie on a PTO as a favor to him because of his time as a Flame.

Maybe remember Toby Reider instead. He was OK. Or, technically, Stone.

You need competition
It’s all good as long as it’s fair
You don’t want to give a spot to young guys that don’t deserve or not ready

I'm not against a few PTO just to have extra vets for pre-season games. Most of the regulars don't bust their butts in pre-season, so it is good to have a few vets auditioning to push the potential rookies.
Sometimes teams use it as a way to build goodwill with players and agents. When players are on PTOs, they are auditioning for the league as a whole.
I would be reluctant to sign any PTOs though, unless they really blew the doors off.

That is my recollection as well. Treliving promised to get him into game if he signed. Those couple games were a complete train wreck.

What does a guy get paid while on PTO? Is it negotiated, or set by CBA?

I'm guessing they were as iffy as anyone on his long term prospects. But opening day one with him signed maxed out their LTIR space for the season.

One of the annoying things Brad did, any cap space he had it felt like it was burning a hole in his pocket and had to be spent on anyone.
