I'm sure there are exceptions, but it feels like assistant coaches never seem to do well when taking over for the head coach they served under.

Mitch Love. Just feels like a logical choice when you have a young, up-and-coming HC in your system who's won AHL Coach of the Year back to back. Not sure they'll risk it, but I hope they do ... I think he'll have a great coaching career and it'd be a shame if he got that chance somewhere other than Calgary.

Problem for Huska is he was their assistant. The nice guy. Darryl's good cop. The role players go to for help when the head coach is being a hardass. And there was no captain! So he (and Muller) would have been burdened with all sorts of crap.

You bring Huska in as Head coach (to be respected rather than liked), when the players are kind of already running the asylum, could mean they walk all over him. He seems smart, has solid communication skills, but the few interviews i see, Huska comes across as nice. Not sure they need that.

I think Mitch Love makes a lot of sense do to organization familiarity. Outside of the organization, I hope they do not go with an old retread like Boudreau, Laviolette, Vigneault. I am ok with a low mileage retread - a Jim Montgomery-type. Dave Hakstol probably did not get a lot of people excited, but he seems to be doing a good job. Perhaps there is someone similar like Brunette, Joe Sacco or Todd Reirden, Travis Green

I still don't think the 'inmates running the asylum' framing is what we're talking about here. Everyone from Friedman down to Ryan Pinder have pointed out it was Sutter not meshing with ANYONE including the assistants and other staff daily at the Dome.

I think picking up Rick Bell and Peter Maher's framing of the events is a little reductive.
Rick Bell is using it as front on the culture war. Peter is just old.

No need for a coach. This group has this. Flames need to be a head of the curve here, try something revolutionary and new age. More inline with how young people today want to be managed. Huge opportunity to show how in touch and progressive we can be, just hire equipment managers, trainers and ensure we have captains picked (elected by the team themselves obviously) to help drive consensus and direction with the strategy and execution amoungst the players.

Choice #1: Mitch Love. He projects like a young, up and coming top coach. He's got a great working history with our most important prospect. I think having him be one of the voices at the core of this page turning would be an excellent move.

Choice #2: Andrew Brunette. He and our franchise player have had an incredibly successful season together.

Who I actually don't want? This may be unfair, but it's Ryan Huska. He was on the bench this past season - and unfairly or not, he did not help the situation play out better than it did. I think the clean sheet needs to be clean - no one on the NHL bench last year should be back on the NHL bench this year. Same for Muller. Do not want.

It's a good point. Nothing really jumps out as a success story in that scenario for me either. Huska is a bit different I feel. A more normal progression is head coach for the affiliate, then head coach for the NHL team. Huska follows that progression with the NHL assistant coach time in between. And assistant for 3 head coaches. He's more organizationally grown as opposed to an assistant who follows around a head coach from team to team.

Actually, the one I definitely do not want back is Muller. The PP alone, don't want him back. He has no idea how to have a successful PP and has no idea how to adjust to other teams PK.

Not convinced that Loves AHL record hasn't been propped up by Wplf alot.
Wolf does ALOT of heavy lifting for that team.

Huska has won consistently at every level (with no wolf). Has developed some strong NHLers. Our PK has been consistently strong while he's run it. Experience at every level. Would get my vote.

No scientific evidence but it does seem that teams that promote their AHL head coaches do better than situations where teams promote existing assistants. Keefe, Cooper and even Woodcroft are promoted AHL head coaches that have done pretty well and Cassidy was promoted from the Providence Bruins although technically he was promoted to assistant but took over the head coaching duties during his first season as Bruins assistant. Seems to be the better way to go.
