Especially when your team has clear possession of the puck in a decent shooting area.

I like Gilbert too but he's also a great example of what's wrong with hockey culture. He is doing everything he can to try and get an NHL job, including fighting guys he's over matched against. And that's looked as being admirable in many circles. But does anyone think that's what he wants to do? No. It's just that is what he THINKS he has to do in order to get and keep an NHL job.

Steve Montador felt the same way.

Too bad Jiri has me on ignore, or I would ask him how exactly he knows what Gilbert is thinking, what he wants, and what he doesn't want. ‘Gilbert is an unwilling victim of hockey culture because it fits my narrative’ is not a convincing argument.

Fighting is dumb especially staged fights like the one he had last night. It took away a potential scoring chance, it accomplished nothing and he got injured.

I agree with this, except for one thing- I don't think Gilly was overmatched. He's fought the likes of Landeskog, Kolesar, Simmonds, MacEwen, Bastian, Hayden, and Givani Smith, and did just fine. He's game, and he's usually the first to throw off the gloves. Any fight can result in one of the combatants getting caught with a solid punch, and/or getting hurt. You're right though- the coach already knows he will come to the aid of his teammates, he should win a job based on how he plays, not fights.

This is true on the overmatched part. He was well within his pugilist and fighting skills level with Jonah Gadjovich. They both do quite well within the fisticuff realms on the ice. Gadjovich and Gilbert are both just a level below upper tier fighters in the league (Lucic, Gudbrandson,
Reaves, Johnston, Macdermid etc, not many left). The only upper tier fighter Gadjovich has fought was Deslauriers, but for the most part it’s been against guys just a step below the nuclear deterrents.

I’d say Gadjovich fight card and results are slightly better than Gilbert, but not by enough to be considered outmatched. Gilbert just caught one at the end. It happens to the best of them. Both are tough hombres.
