Maybe they are bringing up the 2 in order to get the cap as close to full as possible, before they put Tanev on LTIR.

Any idea what happened to Stone in the game? I missed the early part. It sounds like he just went to the bench and didn't return versus any specific action on the ice. He might have aggravated an existing injury.

With Tanev out as well (Canucks fans have said for years this is normal and why he wasn't a priority for Benning - maybe we just got lucky last year), and Kylington's unknown situation, this is a pretty dire turn for what was vaunted as the deepest defense in the league in the pre-season.

In hindsight it would have been great if we could have kept Valimaki but he didn't distinguish himself in preseason. Unfortunately Mackay didn't give anybody any confidence either yesterday and got benched. That last pairing is going to be tremendously weak unless Sutter rejigs the lines to have a vet with each AHLer.

So I'm gonna go start a new trade Hanifin for a RW thread...

Seriously though, what seemed to be a huge strength of this team going into camp with 10 NHL defensemen now looks like the biggest weakness of this team. I didn't expect missing 3 of our top 7D this early in the year. I hope everyone gets back quickly, or someone takes the opportunity and runs with it.

I don't understand why people keep asking when the message from the team and the media has been abundantly clear: We won't know anything about what is going on out of respect for whatever it is he is dealing with. Just let it go.

Didn't step up and had clearly lost confidence.

I have a sneaking suspicion that although Valimaki did nothing to deserve NHL ice time, he will regain his confidence now and flourish. As a Flames fan, I'm just preparing myself for that pain.

Valimaki's situation always reminded me of Anton Strahlman being let go from the Flames roster for some reason. Let's hope he doesn't turn out to be that good.

They could put Kylington on LTIR now to create about $2.5 million in space and call up a forward (although, I think they're at the 23 man roster limit, so they'd still need to put someone on IR to make it work). No one in the AHL is making more than a million, so Kylington to LTIR would be more than enough cap space.

If they put Tanev on regular IR, he'd have to miss Monday and Tuesday's games, so I hope the fact that they didn't put him on IR means they're hopeful he can play in one or both of the games.

Can they put Kilington on LTIR? I thought the Flames explored the option before the season began, but were rebuffed by the League.

There must be a way. Montreal did it previously with Drouin.

I don't see why not. He's on regular IR now. I think they may have looked at having him classified as non-roster and not having his cap hit count at all, but as long as his cap hit is counting and he's not playing, he should be able to be put on LTIR.

Habs did not expect Drouin back. League agreed. Flames expect Kylington back.

Valimaki valiantly validated...

Can't believe how incredibly thin the Flames got on D before 15 GP into a season. Scary to think how thing we are now without Tanev,Kylinton and Stone.

If anything crates this season it's going to be how the defense holds up. And right now? I'm a tad concerned.

Yes, whereas, if they had put him on LTIR before, they would not have created that much space, because they weren't very close to the cap. I think that, now that they have a couple injuries, they brought these guys up to get right up to the cap so that they can put someone on LTIR and get maximum benefit for that.

And I hope you are right that they are planning on using Kylington, and not Tanev.
