Froese is a vet. Who was recalled instead of the rookie.
That’s the exact problem though.

The only way young players actually get experience is to get games. But instead this team always seems to want to have low upside veterans in 4th line forward roles instead of younger players.

Giving young kids experience in the middle of the season is not a coaches job. Winning games is.

You’ve got high hopes for Froese’s impact on this game.

Teams that allow young kids to gain experience in the middle of the season are typically the ones that win games, though. Heck look at treliving's Tenure here, his two most successful seasons were 2015 when guys like Gaudreau, Granlund, Jooris, Ferland, etc were lineup regulars, and 2018 pre ASB when guys like Mangiapane, Kylington, Andersson, Dube, Valimaki, did the same. Look at the 2016 Penguins who were dead in the water out of a playoff position until they started calling up the entire Scranton AHL roster and suddenly found themselves rolling to the Cup. I think the 2018 Blues had a similar story.

Callups instill life and compete into teams with entitled veterans.

I have no opinion on Froese but I certainly think someone like Matthew Phillips, Oliver Kylington, Dmitry Zavgorodniy or Glen Gawdin could help this team a lot more than certain established, underperforming vets penciled into the lineup every night.

I don’t believe I made any such claim. I quoted a post solely focusing on giving kids experience. That isn’t a reason.

If Ryan goes on IR, I suspect we may see a kid recalled.

But a player having experience shouldn’t be the determining factor then either.

Froese is a known quantity. He’s not going to do anything of consequence but he’s also not as likely to hurt you. He’s a no upside player at this point of his career.

Gawdin is more unknown. He could be a player that actually had some impact, but his downside isn’t known either so teams don’t want to take the risk.

It’s just a GM and coach playing it safe, that’s it.

Personally I’d take the potential upside of Gawdin over the no upside of Froese at this point. And I think Gawdin would be more likely to help us win a game than Froese would too.

So would I, I thanked your post in agreement on the last page. But I also know way less about each players abilities than those in the organization.

I do think think there is some potentially some frustration for the young guys in the org with the signing of guys like Leivo, Nordstrom, and Simon.

Bennett already has flagged his dissatisfaction about not getting more ice time while Leivo, Simon, and Nordstrom seem to have longer leashes and get more top 6 minutes.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Gawdin and Phillips are frustrated too.

I’m sure Phillips would compare himself to a guy like Yamamoto considering they were both in the WHL, both Right Wings, and were both top scorers in that league.

For both of them 16-17 and 17-18 were their last two WHL seasons.

Phillips: GP-141, G-98, P-202, PPG- 1.43
Yamamoto: GP - 105, G-63, P-163, PPG-1.55

So pretty similar production at that level.

And then both played their first AHL games in 18-19, and started 19-20 in the AHL.

Phillips: GP-103, G-28, P-71, PPG- 0.69
Yamamoto: GP - 50, G - 18, P - 33, PPG-0.66

Phillips was actually outscoring him at that level.

So if you’re Phillips you’re watching this guy you competed against you’re whole career, who you’ve performed just as well as offensively your whole career, get his shot in the NHL on a line with Draisaitl and become a good NHL player, but you can’t even get a game.

I wouldnt be surprised at all if he’d be a bit frustrated with not even feeling like he had a shot coming out of camp.

Flames announce Ryan is on LTIR which means he will miss a minimum of 10 games or 24 days.

Like I said "meh."

Dunno... maybe Froese showed more in practice, had better habits?

The guy he's subbing in for was another late bloomer.

Of course, Froese also had a great year. 42 points in 46 games. Gawain had 47 in 53 (with a few less goals). Yes, he’s 29, but maybe his game resembles Ryan more - who knows.
