Even reality TV is big business on the support side. Sure JPL will benefit, but the production needs all kinds of support like transport, temp buildings/shelters, set trailers, location support & prep/design (yes even for reality), craft services, food/alcohol for an army, dry-cleaning, and all the things they do for the "dates". You're effectively housing ~200+ people for a couple months and everything they'll need in that time.
Never mind the impacts from the exposure to the region as a whole, its a huge boost to the economy.
|
This is exactly what I'm wondering about, how much of all the production support comes from local businesses vs being trucked in by the show? If they are hiring local (Alberta) contractors and companies to supply tents and set design and other things that is a nice boost for the Alberta economy. If they are trucking in most of their own stuff from California or wherever with their own associated crews it doesn't provide much support for the local economy.
The company that my mom works for would be one such local company that could significantly benefit from this production if they can get a contract to provide transportation services. I wonder if they have been in contact with each other yet.

My understanding is it's a bit of a mix but there is absolutely a lot of need for local talent. For example, a company I used to work for shot a commercial in Hawaii and they ended up working with local film crews to get all the B-reel location shots in the right place, at the right time of day, etc. Turned out that these guys were basically the local crew for any production coming to the island.
That's the skilled work, but there's work on the "unskilled labour" side too. Even if they truck in their own trailers they would need to be cleaned, hooked up to utilities, etc. Vehicles need to be rented, people need to eat and get taxi'd about so all that money goes to the local economy.
I haven't crunched the numbers obviously, but film & tv productions bring a measurable economic return. You could probably look on CED's website or do some googling to find more info, but it's very competitive with jurisdictions providing incentives and tax benefits to the studios (sometimes to the point where they end up wiping out the return, but that's another matter).

Apart from the saps who had their reservations cancelled, this is definitely a win for the provincial economy. Big or small, we'll take it!

That bachelor will have the chance at a starava KOM as he will likely set the record for the guy who got action in the most rooms in stay
This version of the show will get more attention from me that prior versions
It would be interesting to know the financial details of how much they paid per room etc.

An Alberta Business is being paid a ton of cash to sequester a bunch of TV degenerates away from regular society for 9 weeks?
This seems like a win all around.

I hope it is the Bachelor. Then I can hang out in Jasper waiting for the contestants who get booted and are looking for a quick rebound.

There's a Patty or Selma clip that I think applies here but I can't find it. Is it from the one where they go to the theme park and Lisa drinks the water and calls herself the Lizard Queen?

They normally have a gigantic conference at the end of April that has been cancelled. The lodge is completely booked full and attendees are left booking rooms in other Jasper hotels. The banquet hall doesn't seat all the attendees for meals so they have overflow sections setup for all three meals. The bars rake in a killing during this conference. Since that conference is cancelled the Bachelorette booking will do well to make up for it. 9 straight weeks of no vacancy during a time when they wouldn't come close to being full is quite a good deal for them.
