I can just imagine the look on Bill Daley’s face if he pulls out that gold card and sees the oilers logo once again. It will be priceless. It may even include him putting his head back and looking to the sky in disgust before he flips it over.
I was so angry the day the oilers won the 2015 draft lottery. But since then, they’ve truly shown how NG they are. They are at a whole other level of suck showing how bad they are with the best player in the world. I know it won’t matter if they win one of the top picks. They’re still no good and they always will be. I’ll laugh at them tonight whether they win one of the lottery picks or not.

My gut has been telling me for 2 days that the Wings win this one. I cannot explain it but I just can't shake the feeling. That being said, I have no f'n clue. I almost want Edmonton to win just to watch them fail again.

can't we just watch them fail without giving them Hughes or Kakko?

It would be nice if they could come up with a system something along the lines of taking the last 10 games of the season for the bottom 5 clubs and rewarding them first overall by means of best winning percentage. Win your way to the top pick versus tanking.
|
A bad team might just be a bad team. If they can't win at the beginning of the season they can't win at the end.
And just anomolies that happen in 10 games would ruin the draft. The Flyers would be one of the 'worst' teams this year with their 2 wins in their last 10.
Tanking is overstated. Buffalo sucked for McDavid but the team was intentionally bad, not the players. Outside of that, I doubt there's much of an active issue of tanking.

But as stated, take the best record of the bottom 5 teams to obtain the first overall. Philadelphia’s record in the last 10 games wouldnt factor in as they’re 22nd or something.
Teams don’t necessarily tank, but with nothing to play for they’re certainly not as involved.
If teams are just simply ‘bad’, especially start to finish of the year as you eluded to, then more needs to be done by them to improve beyond waiting the season out for one player in the draft. They need to find signings, trades, develop, etc in addition to the draft. If said team didn’t do well in the final games of the year they would still get a top 5 pick, but the team who played the best amongst the bottom 5 of the league would be rewarded accordingly. Again, win your way to the best draft spot versus losing. It’s not like they’re comparing their record to Tampa and Calgary in these games. They’re competing with the other bottom teams who are also struggling. And if they have a bad 10 game stretch at the end to lose out, it’s not all that different than bubble teams having a bad 10 game stretch and falling out of a playoff spot.
I’m sure it’s a silly idea and I appreciate your view and the motive behind it. Again I’m just spitballing and would like to see something where teams earn their rewards.
Thanks for replying all the same.

This is one lottery that I would be totally okay if it was fixed to prevent a team winning.

How good is Hughes? I have heard everything from "..he is a Nico Hischier equivalent." to the "...best player to be drafted since Connor McDavid."

He's good enough that we don't want the chance of his talents being wasted on a no good team.

I am secretly hoping that the Oilers win on Hughes simply because it will make them even less likely to change things and let the OBC run things. 5 1st overall picks, surely they can't lose now! Hughes is the key to success (aside from already having a generational player and a 50 goal scorer)

I agree with Burke - a team winning the lottery should not be eligible to win it again for at least 3 years (I would say longer - at least 5 years).

I was onboard with this - but this year throws a curveball into the situation. What do you do with the Colorado/Ottawa scenario?
Colorado's a playoff team - is it fair to measure up their results against non-playoff teams? Or if you use Ottawa - they have no motivation to win at all.
