If he knew he was going to the leafs, why would he want the leafs to give up assets for him and make the team weaker in the future? He totally screwed the isles but was thinking of the team he would be playing for.

Who's to say the Leafs would have been the ones to trade for him at the deadline? He still could have signed their in the summer anyway

You're giving them too much credit, they really aren't that smart...
They'd be stupid and bandwagon whatever team McDavid ran to, claiming to be longtime secret admirers of said team.
Whichever team gets him would have to deal with an influx of incredibly stupid, obnoxious and toxic fans who suggest the most idiotic trades and signings, have little clue of goings-on elsewhere in the NHL, get too negative during the bad times and get too positive during the good times.

Well, it could be worse. The Flyer faithful once booed a group of 9/11 widows.
I have been to MSG when they were playing the Islanders. Their fans began to applaud a paralyzed cop who was doing the puck drop until they announced he was from Long Island. The boos were loud and long.
I thought it was in a bit of good fun but it did feel genuine and nasty. Was an embarrassment.
