That was as good a Flames goaltending performance as I have seen in some time. If this guy can keep it up he may earn himself some money in an extension.

I was thinking something like that. Being an RFA, he will be a little lower than other late bloomers like Jones or Talbot.
I wouldn't be surprised if term ends up being the main negotiating point though. He might insist on a 2 year deal to maximize his UFA potential earnings.
As a side note, I liked reading the thread when we first signed him. I would like to know more about the story of how the Flames identified him. It doesn't sound like many NHL teams, if any, were in on him. Rittich mentioned that he knew the Flames were interested, but nothing happened for a long time and he thought they weren't interested anymore. Then they approached him out of the blue and the signing happened very quickly at that point. Rittich acknowledged it was a risk to disrupt him European career to go the AHL to earn an NHL spot in the future, but he didn't expect to go right to the NHL and knew he had to work for it.
Does anyone know if Rittich was ever ranked by any of the major scouting services when he was draft eligible?

I’d give him a 3 x $2.5m deal, no hesitation.

Rittich has to be in the Vezina conversation now, which is crazy to me as I thought goaltending would be the Flames biggest weakness this year

David Rittich has never played 58 games in a season.
The hope is that he can continue to build on this excellent first half and cobble together a terrific sophomore year. I'm not sure if he is a "starting goalie" in the NHL, but he sure looks like he will get there. He was fantastic tonight.

2015-16 in the Czech league he played 48 regular season games and 10 playoff games.

Was Kiprusoff the starting goalie when Sutter brought him in?
And started 80 percent of the games for which he was healthy?

Fine.
It was a long time ago, but from what I recall Kiprusoff was pretty much the Flames's #1 goalie from the time he was traded. He played 39 games that year, but only because he missed a bunch with a collarbone(?) injury. There was ongoing discussion in the summer and all through the lockout whether he could continue to provide the same results over the course of a +60-game workload. The concern was legitimate because there are MANY goalies who burst on to the scene, look like world-beaters, and are never able to maintain that same level of play consistently from one year to the next. David Rittich has a lot to prove yet.
I have continued to maintain that the Flames coaches are reluctant to single out a "starting goalie" for the season. Rittich is playing well, and he has played consistently better than Smith, so I expect he will get a majority of the starts—even if only by a small margin.
