Likely not going to happen, and I don't like the coach not having autonomy to pick his staff.
I agree to a point, but getting to choose his own associate coach is still pretty huge, and at least he'll get to dictate who does what, it's not like he's going to be told "This is Marty, he'll be in charge of special teams"

Besides, if GG gets to know these guys and then decides he doesn't like what they bring to the table, I'm sure management will have no problem looking elsewhere at that point. Much like how Treliving didn't immediately fire Hartley to bring in someone of his own choosing.

Ben Kuzma suggests current Utica assistant Paul Jerrard may be under consideration.

Jerrard has been an assistant for Gulutzan in the AHL and when he was Stars head coach.

Seems to have followed Gulutzan to the Canucks organization after the Stars fired them both.

Interesting.

Gulutzan will get to bring in at least one of his guys.

In an interview I heard today. GG mentioned that Nieuwendyk called him when he heard GG took HC job in Calgary. Nieuwendyk went on to describe how outstanding Gelinas was to GG, more or less telling him that Gelinas is a keeper. There was alot of discussion with GG, all very positive about Gelinas. Players have a deep respect for Gelinas that is major currency for a coaching staff.

That's nice, but Niewy hasn't exactly instilled confidence in his GM abilities, so not sure what it means that he likes Gelinas

Regardless, I like Gelinas as a personality so I hope he's a good coach, and I do agree with the thoughts that GG will get to pick his role and if it doesn't work out go in another direction. It likely was decent to keep some stability with coaches.

I was happy from day one, I loved Burke

His bite was entertaining as hell, and anyone that get the gears of Kevin Lowe like that was more than welcome to call Olympic Way his home.

I guess I'm waiting to see if this is an assistant coach or an associate coach? His choice or Treliving's choice (think Treliving said his with input)?

If he hires a guy almost as qualified as himself he brings in a replacement threat, but also beefs up the intellect and firepower behind the bench.

Leeman is among a number of candidates listed above, and it looks like his contracted status with Providence through 2020 could be an obstacle.

There is a decent young core in place, and all of the management and coaches seem to be young, hard working, sharp minded guys but there is still a long ways to go before they accomplish what I want them to, which is to be a perennial Stanley Cup contending team.

by rejoicing i meant more that the team and management have not turned into the laughing stock that many were concerned about becoming.

I am cautiously optimistic and agree about where we would like to see the club, but it could be much much worse.. Canucks or Oilers worse.. All im saying is thank god it hasnt become that.

And Bingo, theres no way you could have predicted that Burke would come in, shut his mouth and go about just focusing on turning this franchise around. He could have easily become an embarrassment as he had with TO and Van.. where I agree with you is I have not been disappointed since day 1.

Actually, a lot of people took him at his word and predicted exactly that. The Burke sideshow hysterics were part of a Toronto media narrative that appealed to sky-is-falling folks.

Yes I also was not concerned. Burke always seemed like a successful knowledgable and entertaining hockey guy. Not saying he doesn't sometimes make you shake his head with his posturing (mostly in the past as a GM) but generally entertaining.

I immediately felt better when he was hired, brought instant credibility to the org. which was sorely missing with Feaster IMO.

Do we need to dig up the thread to show what you guys actually thought? It's easy to say that you never had an issue and believed Burke would be who he is now, but I'm not sure there were that many people who thought Burke was the right guy for the job.

I know I was certainly concerned.

Well, he did...

Quote:

...and this never happened.

I was concerned when Burke was hired. I was never a fan of his work in Toronto, and my memories of his time in Vancouver soured me on his capabilities as a GM, and on his persona. I can't say that my opinion of him has changed at all. I still think he is a bombastic media whore, but I am very happy with how he has gone about his business with the team while here in Calgary. His abrasive personality and the nonsense he spouts in the media is much more palatable now that he is not the one making player personnel decisions.

I have to admit, he is fairly entertaining.
