I have several times, and I don't take any issue with what he said. Kopitar is one of the best centres in the NHL, he has won two Stanley Cups, and is now the captain of his team. He will probably be a first-ballot Hall of Famer when it is all said and done, and that—in my opinion—would qualify him as "one of the all time greats.

Your initial response focused on him being a current top 5 centre, while I thought by my wording it was obvious I was disagreeing with the assertion he'd go down as an all-time great.

IMO he may be a hall of famer but first ballot is certainly no slam dunk at this point. I guess I was thinking of all time great centres and I'm not sure I'd put him in that category. We can agree to disagree.

I'm not too sure about the big leagues, but I know sometimes in junior the coaches/management select C and A's ahead of time but put it up to a "anonymous team vote" and don't read the ballots.

The guy isn't a PPG player over his career. If he has some longevity and hits 1000 points he may enter the HOF but I doubt he's 1st ballot based on his career to date. Good player though and well deserving of the captaincy.

Basically he's the European Toews. He has been the Kings leading scorer for 9 straight seasons now, just quietly putting up his points. The last time he wasn't their leading scorer was 2006-07 when Cammalleri and Frolov surpassed him.

He's not as good a player as Eric Lindros who wasn't 1st ballot and still hasn't got in. I don't consider Toews a slam dunk for the HOF based on his stats not being HOF caliber.

PPG over the course of a career is a tough standard these days, I'm not sure that's fair. Patick Kane is barely at PPG career to date and he's an elite, pure offensive player. I doubt even he finishes with more points than games played once his golden years get factored in.

Lindros is not yet in the HHOF because he didn't ever win the Stanley Cup. Had he lead one of those Flyers teams to a championship, I think he would be in. Like it or not the Cup is still a major criterion for induction.

Kane will be closer to the standard than Kopitar and Toews. Remember making the HOF is an individual achievement and winning the cup is a team achievement guys like Alexander Mogilny who is a member of the triple gold club is still not in the HOF.

Winning the cup is not a major criterion. Jarome Igina or Joe Thornton should not be slighted in the least for not winning a cup.

And they won't be because they are among the best players of their generation. But there is plenty of evidence to show that a Stanley Cup win goes a long way towards the induction of lesser players, and that the entry of even exceptional players can be delayed by missing it from one's resume.
