Hiller did alright last year sharing duties with Ramo. He deserves some credit for us making the playoffs.

This year he was completely sub-par. His positioning was off, his rebound control was horrid, his reaction time to a play was bad. He showed his age. I wish him all the best back in Europe, as I don't think there is any team willing to offer him a tryout let alone a 1 year contract in the NHL

How many times did Jonas say "yeah" in that media scrum?

I feel bad for the guy, but there comes a time in every athlete's career when the time comes to walk away. He had a good run.

Thanks for last season Jonas, it was really fun.

As much as Hiller was a disaster this season, he was a big reason for the success last year, and has been a professional through this last quarter of the season when he wasn't playing and had to endure Backstrom coming in and getting all the praise for being a 'true pro". Hiller never complained publicly about the situation and I think that's good on him.

He's had a very good career in the NHL, made some good money, I'm sure he won't mind playing some lower-level hockey at home. Best of luck Jonas!

Good to hear Dougie declining the World Championships in order to get a better start next season and improving in the summer.

Man, Gio is pure class. Gets asked if goaltending was indeed the issue for the team this year and Gio responds with it was poor defensive play and a team wide failure.

Fantastic captain.

I just hope Treliving learns from letting Schlemko go last season and doesn't do the same with Nakladal this season. There's really no one ready to make the jump next season and pass what Nakladal can do.

Of course, there's always the chance of Kulak-like training camp performances, plus who knows what Rasmus or Kylington will do. Maybe even Wotherspoon has turned that corner. But as it stands, re-sign NakCity. He's earned it.

Flat out lying and distorting the facts. He'd make an excellent politician.

In no way intended to pick on your post...I've just read several of these kinds of posts around here lately.

I must be missing something because Ortio's good stretch run, statistically wouldn't even be average over the year. On top of that, these were meaningless games with no pressure of a playoff drive.

Outside of a big move for a top flight goalie, a tandem of Antii Raanta and Chad Johnson would give the Flames a better chance of receiving average goaltending over the year at a cheap price, than handing at least the back up role to Ortio.

I'm fine with re-signing Ortio on a last chance short term 1 year show me contract at <$1MM which then gets jettisoned via waivers or buried in the AHL when he goes out with an .890 to start the season or doesn't even win a job out of camp.

Nice guy but, sure hasn't shown the ability to be average in plenty of opportunity.

Was it really a mistake though? His hands were tied with a full roster at the time. I don't see that being the case with Nakladal this year, the team has some flexibility in the back end to add him in.

I just don't think Schlemko was that big of a miss for Treliving.

Kind of disappointed as a fan that many of our players are declining World Championship invitations. It would've been nice to watch them perform in different circumstances with different teammates/linemates.

I do understand their reasoning though and halfway expected this to happen. Doesn't make it any less disappointing though.

Giordano being a vet, kinda expected at this point. Really wish Brodie and Hamilton would go though

I think the mistake, in hindsight, was not trading Wideman after his explosive season. It would have been a gutsy move after such a great season, but obviously it would have been the right time.

Just a random thought, but I wouldn't be surprised if the World Cup crews have asked them to take it off. Brodie, Gio and Hamilton could all end up on teams, and that would be a lot of hockey.

I see the roster being just as full this year, barring any trades.

Top 3 is set in Gio, Brodie and Hamilton

Still have the vets in Smid, Wideman, and Engelland. Wotherspoon is ready, Kulak not far behind. Possible darkhorse camps (Andersson)?

Wasn't the rumour that Treliving tried hard to move Wideman last summer but had no takers. Coming off a great season or not getting anyone to take on ten million over two years was a tough sell.

Didn't know where to add this, but I watched Backstrom's media availability after the Wild game. For those of you who say that it doesn't matter with regards to the Flames showing some class and giving Backstrom the last start against his former team, I encourage you to watch it. Really glad that the Flames did Backstrom a solid there. I think the probably tried to do the same thing with Hiller, but unfortunately for Hiller things didn't go his way.

One thing that makes this organization easy to cheer for is the amount of class it shows towards their players. What a contrast to the team up north.
