Municipalities did have exclusive NXX's, but wiith WNP, the NXX could be ported in-province.

Any one actually dial phone numbers anymore? Everything is just clicked of websites or added to contacts. You don't have to remember phone numbers anymore so the whole Calgary/ Edmonton thing doesn't even matter anymore.

What about the actual 3 number area code combos?

8*10*10 = 800 combos (minus a few like 911 etc)

For example, the US with 319 million right now have used 319 combinations. That's basically 1 area code per million people. So might get interesting when US gets close to 800 million in population. Of course you have 8 million combos with each area code, so they should be ok.

Anyways, I've had my 403 number for 15 years. Not giving it up.

Not having a 403 would be embarrassing. I've got two in the queue for my kids just for this reason.

587's suck. I got my 403 just before. 825 sounds telemarketerish.

I will never have a 7 digit license plate or 587 / 825 area code.

In some countries, landlines and mobile phones have different area codes. I liked that so you knew what type of phone you were communicating with.

I am currently living in the 905 area code region but got shafted with a 289 number. Makes me feel like an imposter.

If we have 30 million numbers in just Alberta, do we really need it? I don't really care if they add it, but even if every person in the province has 4 phones we wouldn't even need 3 area codes.

You mean you reserved a phone number for them?

I feel kind of silly because I don't know the answer to this, but what constitutes long-distance calling now? Is calling a 780 number from Calgary long-distance? What about 587? I have unlimited long-distance on my plan so I don't even know anymore.

Lots of M2M out there that require a number.

True, that still seems like a massive discrepancy. Even with numbers people don't like for superstitious reasons (certain groups disliking the number 4), month to month and companies that have numbers on layaway, it seems enormous.

Cell phones
Home phones
Company numbers
Company direct lines
Tablet SIM cards
On star etc
Elevators
Building alarm systems
Remote equipment monitoring

There are way more phone lines in use than we often think about, since many of them aren't normally used by humans. And on top of that, we have more phone lines dedicated to our personal use than simply our cell phone.

Also, many combinations of numbers can't be given out, as an easy example, you can't have a 911 area code.

Good question. My number is from the Olds area and I've had a couple people ask me why they needed to dial 1 in front of it for long distance, so I guess it's considered long distance to Calgary. I too have unlimited so I don't care.

I think less of people with 587 numbers, somehow, without any fault of their own, they are somehow less Calgarian.

You can't have *11 as either an area code or as the first three digits of your phone number. Those are all reserved for civic services.

I too have unlimited long distance, so I have no idea what my calling boundary is anymore.

But I will offer up this tip, just in case anyone is unaware: Enter all of your numbers, even local ones, into your phone with the 1 and the area code. Local calls go out just fine, and you'll never have to manually enter a 1 (or listen to the annoying message saying that you should have) ever again for long distance. An added bonus is that when you're out of town and calling home, it also works seamlessly.

Unless you are on Telus, in which case they will tell you "The number you are calling is in your local area code, there is no need to dial 1 before the number" then disconnect you. Why? Because they are idiots, that's why.

I am surprised they will assign an area code for regular use with 8XX. I foresee people will be confused with 1-800 number spam calls.

I will hold on to my 403 numbers as long as I can.

Lol at the part of the article that says there are people that want to be the first ones with the new area code. F-that. You can pry my 403 from my cold dead hands.
Ditto.

When I established my company I needed 3 new lines and this is how that conversation went:

"What phone numbers do you want?"

I dont care.

"Well if you start with 587 you can have any number you want."

No. It has to be a 403.
