This is really a non issue for most students. It is huge for the most affected students though. Like Rouge said this isn't a free for all. It's a much needed thing that hopefully allows kids to be who they are.
Exactly the same way. If someone identifies as a female, she would be welcomed onto the girls team. Simple as that.
Do you honestly think some guy is going to be shallow enough to trick his way onto a team by pretending his trans, just so he can win a scoring race?
That he's going to play some long-con to get an elusive championship. No.
This is 2016, let 20th century thinking stay in the past.
It is important to be inclusive to all and to respect the choices and lives of everyone; especially those young people who are just starting to discover themselves.
On Bell Lets Talk day, no less, where we are supposed to be more understanding of the root causes of depression, mental illness and stigmas I don't understand how people can still be so narrow-minded.
Another great post. Summed up what I was going to type out, perfectly. This is really coming off as "What the hell is this annoying stuff that I'm not used to? This shouldn't be here".
There won't be an epidemic of kids identifying as the opposite gender for the lulz, or to get into the girls change room. Good lord.

Basically the same guidelines as were released in Nova Scotia in 2014. Since Nova Scotia has become a smouldering crater of charred, politically correct, gender-fluid corpses, I naturally assume the same will happen here in Alberta.

It's happened in professional sports, so sure, could happen. But there is also another side. My daughter for example, is probably not going to be comfortable playing on a team with a boy. She is not the most athletic girl, and she wants to play with girls because she has a chance. Put a boy in the mix, and it can totally change the dynamic.
It's not narrow minded to have concerns. It's narrow minded to reject them out right. I'm raising my concerns which are as valid as yours.

Vox, I highly recommend watching this interview with Against Me's transgendered frontwoman, Laura Jane Grace. This stuff so much more important than you're giving it credit for, and your concerns so minimal and not very realistic at the same time.

Disagree with some of this. How are you going to stop a straight boy from wandering into the girls change room for kicks? Don't see how you are going to stop that. Why can't my daughter be labelled as female? She is. She is not even ashamed of it. Why can't I be referred to as my children's Father? I have no problem, and even enjoy, be known that way.
How big a problem is really being solved vs how much potential problem is being created. I have lots of gays friends, had a gay room mate for a while, not a single one of them has every had a problem using the mens washroom.
I even read an article, though I can't find it again, stating that this applied to families as well, so I should be able to take my daughter into the ladies room. Yeah, I have a problem with that.
Also, I don't think you understand the difference between gay and gender identification.
Plus, the policy is about much more than washroom preference. It's about respecting how the child/student feels inside and encouraging him/her etc to embrace their true nature.
There are already perverts that skirt or ignore our laws now.
It happens. There's always a small few that hurt the bunch.
This law will however not create any more. Anyone who is doing bad things, didn't need this law. Conversely, this law doesn't give any incentive to be a law breaker.
It helps kids that are at risk through no fault of their own
Lastly, for the two that made the stupid and tired GOP argument of a guy walking into a ladies washroom. There are many things wrong with that. But entirely incorrect in this thread. This thread is about students. Not the general public. So you have no argument.
Though I look forward to your argument in the future.

Yes, but that's not fair at all Vox. What you're essentially saying even if you don't intend is - A boy who has identified that he's a girl shouldn't have the option to be a girl because it might make my daughter uncomfortable and she wants to play sports with only girls.

You know what, concerns are valid. I can't argue against that. As much as I want the genders to be equal I get the fact that they aren't. This isn't about sports though. It's about gender identity. Sometimes a male feels like a female....can't help that.......

This stuff I agree with. People should learn to accept who they are , and yes, I have an inclination of the difference between gay and gender identification. Your making too big a deal out of that statement, but it doesn't really matter.
Oh yeah, just saw the stuff about having gay friends and them never having a problem using the men's washroom. Vox, you may have to clarify what you know about transgendered people, it seems there may be a misunderstanding on your part?

But this initiative is designed precisely to help them accept who they are......and you don't agree with it because of the idea that your daughter may be uncomfortable.

Yes, that's what I'm feeling, but I'm not quite saying it. I'm saying I'm very troubled by it, which actually is why I started the thread and have posted more in this one thread than any other in my history here. I'm open to the discussion. But yes, I worry about a lot of it. Even for the transgendered kids. I don't know that this is the answer. I don't KNOW that its NOT the answer either.

You're half right. People should learn to accept how other people are. They may not be the same as you and they may have different ways of life; it doesn't mean they should be forced into something that feels more "comfortable" for others.
Then the world would be a much more tolerant and understanding place.

To be fair, having gay friends has nothing to do with transgendered people.
I have gay co-workers and friends. They have no problem using the mens washroom. They had no problem with me being there as a non gay person. It's all silly.

This is a argument that I respect. And it hits home, as it hits at the nature of one of my big concerns. You may have a good point. I'll think about that one.
