The Rangers need to keep Gorton. The NHL won't step in and file a human rights tribunal for pushing Sather out the door for being too old. The Rangers should be the ones pushing him out the door.

But he had a good point at that time. It was a huge problem. In today's payroll parity situation, he's done very well for the Rangers, all other things considered.

Isn't this classic Sather though? Unless it's ownership pushing him out the GM door, I doubt he steps down.

Before the salary cap Sather was one of the worst GM's, especially with free agent contracts. Since the salary cap he has been forced to show discipline and has actually been pretty good IMO.

Seems to me if you look at the timelines Sather's best work came after Jeff Gorton was hired. I don't think that's any coincidence and it's not a surprise that interest in him has possibly prompted Sather going upstairs. Gorton is also the guy that kickstarted the Bruins cup winning team and seems like a guy that knows what he's doing.
