Sather considering stepping down as GM of NYR
http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/ho...icle-1.2248196
Quote:
Glen Sather is undecided about whether he will remain general manager of the Rangers for a 16th year.
A source confirmed to the Daily News on Friday the accuracy of a report that the 71-year-old is considering stepping down from his GM post - though he perhaps would remain in the role of president.
Jeff Gorton, Sather's assistant GM the past four years, would be the obvious choice to succeed him. Gorton previously was the interim GM of the Boston Bruins and is heavily involved in the Rangers' daily operations, particularly on the contract negotiation end.
Sather essentially has a lifetime contract at the Garden. He has been president-GM since June 2000.

Smart. Get out now after you sold the team's future of 1st round draft picks and leave it for someone else to figure out

I hate the guy, because to me he's dished out some of the league's worst contracts to up the ante in stupidity, only to be time and time outdone by another stupid GM who gladly took on those contracts and gave up value (Holik's contract, then Gomez's). He's always come across as arrogant as well. He's simply been lucky to find a trading partner all these years, but he's probably had an even better scouting staff to help him find the McDonough's in these deals. Plus Lundqvist has helped his job out (at least in the regular season). Overall I don't give much credit to Sather.

Hell, with all of the terrible contracts that Sather has dished out I could see him running the NHLPA for all of the money hes sucked out of the Rangers for it.

This is a Larry brooks story actually.
"Asked whether he would be returning for his 16th year as GM, or whether he had yet to make that decision, Sather replied: “Sorry, I don’t have anything to tell you.”
To the follow-up email in which The Post asked whether it would then be accurate to write that he is, in fact, undecided about his future, Sather responded: “OK.”"

Let me see here... As a head of the billion-dollar enterprise, he's done really well managing difficult contracts. He's surrounded himself with excellent scouting staff and assistants that did a good job. He's made ton of money for the owners throughout his tenure. And he does not deserve any credit?
Of course, your point makes total sense.

I don't think losing a 28th overal pick is that big of a deal. The 2017 pick will likely be a late one as well.

Despite his horrible history of signings, he has been money with the trades.

Just to add, he gave you $8.5 million in 1999 and $12.5 more the next 2 years, yes... 16 friken years ago.
The guy made more money off of Gretzky than Gretzky did himself.

Not when he made that quote, complaining about the financial disparity back in about 1998 when he was the Oilers GM and lamenting how his hands were tied financially.
In his 15 years as GM, the Rags have gotten out if the first round 4 times, along with a laundry list of terrible moves and contracts. Before the cap, his Ranger teams didn't make the playoffs once.
He's an arrogant blow hard with a massive ego. And that was before he left for New York.

Did the Rags use one compliance buy out (Richards) or two?

would probably be a smart move to promote Gorton now before another team snags him. Seems to have been ready for a full time GM job for a while now.

Well yes but he had the money to bury his mistakes in the AHL and do buyouts. Most other teams would need to think twice if they even had the ability to do it.

A terrible GM that took his team the finals and semi finals last two years. I hope we can get a horrible GM like that some day.
