I can't even focus on these types of questions right now. Leave that for Treliving and his staff to worry about next year's roster right now. All I care about is watching playoffs!

No he wasn't. Had him in my hockey pool and he was garbage. In Trotz's doghouse all the time.

Waste of money. We have plenty of offense from the back end. I'd much prefer using the money on a solid defender in his own end or a forward to help make the 2nd line a legit threat.

He's been great... on the 3rd pairing. We don't need him on the PP so there are better options.

Wouldn't want the flames to pay him what he can get as a Ufa. If it was five mill or less, I'd say yeah. But it ain't gonna happen.

Anyone who says Green would be an upgrade on Wideman obviously hasn't watched the Capitals since 2010 and just reads box scores.
Hope Green signs with Edmonton. He would be a perfect fit there. An absolutely garbage defensive player and his offense isn't what it used to be. Do not want.

Devil's advocate:
Green is an upgrade over Wideman in terms of age. He's 3 years younger than people like Wideman and Gio, and a lot younger than alternatives like Paul Martin. But that's pretty much it. Green is older, but probably better, than Franson.
Green has been healthier for the past 2 seasons, and he's actually played pretty well. If he's willing to come to Calgary, I would be more than happy to sign him.
There is also a chance that Wideman, Gio, Brodie, or Russell will have an off year next year. It would be nice to back them up with another defender who is more than capable offensively.
Green could also give a booth to the second powerplay unit, which has really struggled throughout the entirety of the year. Having another right handed shot would be great.
There also aren't really any good young players than deserve to be playing in the spot that Green would be taking. Wootherspoon is more of a defensive specialist and would have an entirely different role.
So basically, to summarize:
-Green is younger than Gio, Wideman, Engelland, and a lot younger than alternatives like Paul Martin
-Green may be willing to sign in Calgary for a smaller amount than in other places
-Green would be great for replacing someone on the top 4 after an injury (which is basically guaranteed to happen)
-Green is a right handed shot and could help the 2nd powerplay unit (probably Gio/Wideman on first PP line, Brodie/Green on the second)
-It is true that he is sometimes in Trotz's doghouse, but that has made him improve throughout the year. Overall, he's had a solid season.
-Calgary's strength and conditioning may end up improving Green's durability, skating, etc.
-Calgary has the cap space
-There are not many other high-end alternatives in FA
There are a lot of potential positives to signing Green, but I doubt he wants to sign here to be 5th on the depth chart. Might as well just use the extra cap to either acquire bad contracts for picks, or to sign a decent forward. We could really use a 2nd line forward. Carl Soderberg might be a nice option in the free agency.

I thought I read things on Capital's boards and other places over the years that indicated that Green has no interest in playing in his home town.

Someone on this site said not too long ago, that they had talked to Mike Greens dad and he stated that Mike had no interest in playing in Calgary. Can't remember the reasoning exactly, but basically no interest in playing for his hometown team.

To the people here who clearly don't watch any Washington games and aren't up on the times:
Green is on the 3rd D pairing in Washington, hogged a ton of PP time and barely any PK time.

I'd play him on the bottom pairing, and give him lots of PP time.
However, he'd probably want tons of money and I think we can get more for less for a bottom pair guy.
So, no.

Right handed, can skate well and put up points. He's a natural fit for the way this team plays and last two seasons he's managed to play 70+ games. I would certainly kick the tires on him but it's going to come down to length of contract over money. I would have no issues paying him $5-6 million per year on a three year deal but longer than that not a chance. He's probably going to get some ridiculous 5-6 year deal from a desperate team so I don't feel there's much chance of him being a Flame unless he really wants to be one.

I disagree, I just dont think Mike Green is a $5-6M Dman anymore and I think the trajectory of his career indicates that he is the antithesis of what this team stands for.

After watching last night's game and seeing how tiny our defence is compared to Anaheim's players, I'd hope the Flames go out and find some big bodied defenders that can skate rather than another mobile offensive dman. We have enough of those guys in Brodie, Russell and Wideman.
I'm not sure what players are available that fit the bill but seeing Russell defend against Getzlaf in the second period there, I could not believe how tiny he looked. I was worried he was going to get crushed.

Green really wants to stay in Washington. I'm not sure they can afford to re-sign Holtby, Green, and Joel Ward however
The guy we will likely target is Michalek for the backend. Could also see us signing a RW (such as Joel Ward if he is available) or someone else along those lines

Don't need Green as another big ticket Dman, and then have him play bottom pairing with another right handed Dman.
Leave that spot for a journeyman like Schlemko, and make a young guy beat him out for a spot.
EDIT - Still though, Green would fit Hartleys system really well IMO, so I wouldn't be upset if we did sign him.
|
I like Schlemko a lot actually. we just need a health d roster.
