People still shop in stores?
Seems most of the laid off brick and mortar employees should go find jobs with UPS, because Amazon is keeping them hella busy.

This is so ironic, in a way.
I got an email from Android Authority, yesterday, saying I won a Nexus 6. So today I was thinking "well, better sell the Xperia Z3 I just bought."
LOL.
Then Sony leaves Canada.
Odd.

I didn't realize that Sony was still around. If someone had asked me out of the blue, what products Sony makes currently, I would have been guessing.

They've actually been making some really good inroads into the photography industry with their mirrorless cameras. Starting to take a (admittedly small) piece of the Canon/Nikon pie.
But having said that, you wouldn't know it from going into one of their Sony Stores, the pro gear (A7 full frame) was competing for shelf space next to the consumer gear. With no real obvious queues as to which line was which.
But walk into a camera/photo shop and their stuff stands up quite well against the other camera manufacturers.

Anyway, as far as the Sony store goes, I never felt like there was a point to it. Sony products can be bought anywhere, so why would I target their specialty store over stores in more convenient locations?

Hate the Sony retail stores. So overpriced. Their not the premium brand they think they are, especially with Samsung so big now. Their audio has always been middle of the road and their TV's are now too. Weren't top of the line since the Trinitron tubes. Heard a joke recently that their last big hit was the 'walkman'
I'm a PS guy, but everything I want for Sony can always be found cheaper elsewhere.

Their small independent film studio was hacked into recently. It barely made the news.
Come on man.

Soooo you're saying I missed the liquidation sale?
Had no idea it was already gone (and had been for that long). Honestly not surprised.

The Sony store on 4th SW is still there. Well, it was there last month when I bought a case for my phone.

Looks like you are right. I think it closed for construction for a while. I believe half of the building is Sony and the other half is something else.

Not to mention that it's a run-down dump with an empty parking lot. Weird that they are closing their stores though...

You didn't realized Sony still made TVs? I bought a sweet Sony TV a year or so ago. Though I didn't buy it from the Sony store.

Not really. They are struggling to redefine their business model like many other Japanese companies. They announced over $2 billion in net losses last year as a company overall.
They've sold off their computer division and their smartphone division and TVs are probably next according to their chairman. All the areas you typically associate Japanese electronics for have been overtaken by their Asian rivals. Sony still has revenue from it's entertainment division but they are going to have to look to changing or dropping a majority of their historical consumer divisions completely just like Panasonic did.

All of Sony's TV panels are made by Korean and Taiwanese companies like LG, etc. There's nothing Sony left in the majority of Sony products aside from presentation.
That said, you could say that an iPhone is mostly Samsung parts too from that perspective...
