You would have to prove that you were using the trademark for a real purpose in order to get a trademark. Plus it costs about 10,000 and takes time to complete. If you had a Hockey stick company called Johnny Hockey you could trademark it. Similar thing for trademarking band names/artist names.

Heh, that's cute.
Johnny's the first hockey player mine ever said. We had a social engagement and we were listening to the game in the car while travelling and she just started saying "Johnny eadreau!!" everytime they said his name.

I don't think Wayner trademarked The Great One, but if you use that term most people will know who you are talking about.

Yeah but thats ancient history, the world of marketing and endorsements has come a long, long way since then.

There's also the angle that if he doesn't trademark it, someone might take advantage of his nickname advertising something he does not approve.

Yeah good point.
I don't think much of it, but maybe my opinion would be different in his situation.

He kind of did. I read a articule about Marcus Stroman trademarking "Height Doesn't Measure Heart" and it mentioned that Gretzky has "The Great One 99" trademarked.

Ya, I agree with this. Someone along the lines would take advantage of his nick name. I think it is fine and I have no issues with this. I hope he makes a bunch of money and is a household name for the next 20 years for hockey fans.
Oh and I can't wait for the skittles promos.

He has "The Great One 99" trademarked (as opposed to just "The Great One").
Given that he trademarked it with his number as a suffix I would presume that by the time he trademarked it someone else had the claim on just "The Great One".

The Great One may have been too generic to pass a trademark review. Adding 99 makes it more specific. Whereas Johnny Hockey (as a combination of words) is more unique.

oh well... we'll get there

This is a parenting success! I applaud you, sir.
Unlike that one poster who said "I'll be at the game tonight....I'm the one wearing a Flames jersey sitting beside my two kids in the Canucks jerseys".

It's possible Gaudreau didn't even know it was being trademarked.
Likely just a smart agent doing what a smart agent should be doing for his clients.

If any other player in the league did this, the majority of this board would mock and ridicule it. Odd decision

Those other players are not Flames though to be fair.
I am sure it is being ridiculed by other fans. Which in turn would be applauded if it was their player.
I'm not huge on the nick name but he might as well maximize how much money he can make.
