This was going to one of my questions when I go to the STH event Tuesday. From my understanding, the Canucks were the main organizers of the young stars tourney. With all the management staff I don't know if they still have it on their radar.
Just wanted to add that last year the tournament was announced on June 6th.

What's the point of rebuilding if you're not going to have prospect tournaments???
I know us forum-frequenting types are in the geeky minority, but I think this is the exact kind of thing the team should be pushing to keep interest high during what is likely to be a very rough patch in the coming couple of years.

I'm looking forward to the updates from the guys that can make it. TIA
Looking forward to seeing few players in particular;
Kanzig, how has he progressed?
Jankowski, just how far has he come and if given a different scheme does his offensive skills show through?
Sieloff, how has the year off affected him?
Ferland, ditto for the most part
Johnny, just how ridiculous will he make others look in this calibre of play, how close is he to the big show. Think he will still start in AHL but how far off is he?
New draft pick, if we get Draisaitl I expect him to push for an NHL job but maybe ready due to size, Ekblad, same, two Sams I think would go back to CHL.

First time Flames prospects attending:
David Wolf
Rushan Rafikov (assuming visa issues workout)
Prospects not attending or won't participate on ice:
Monahan - per Freeway (edit: actually the CBA doesn't allow players who have played more than 70 games in the previous season to attend these camps)
Wotherspoon - shoulder surgery in April
Poirier - shoulder surgery in June

While it's a shame not to see Poirier some more and to an extent Wotherspoon, this will give more viewing time to other plays like Klimchuk and Culkin/Kulak.

Is Monahan even eligible for prospects camp?
Wasn't the rule last year 25 NHL games or something like that.

As per the NHL CBA only the following players can attend these camps:
Quote:
(i) Unsigned Draft Choices;
(ii) Any Player in the Entry Level System with less than 120 NHL Games
played (but who did not play in excess of 70 NHL Games in the preceding
Regular Season);
(iii) Draft-related Unrestricted Free Agents;
(iv) Players who were eligible for selection in the preceding Entry Draft but
were undrafted; and
(v) Any Player who is not in the Entry Level System, who finished the
preceding season disabled, and who submits a written request to the Club,
with a copy to the NHL and the NHLPA, to participate in his Club's
Conditioning Camp.
|
Also should mention that under the terms of the CBA, a NHL team cannot require a player to attend more than 3 of these camps in total even if they meet the requirements listed above.
So for example the Flames cannot require Gaudreau to attend this year's summer camp as he already attended 3. He may however still choose to attend.

any news on baertchi? I remember this tournament started him off on a negative note to start the year last year, but also unclear if the injury he has keeps him out of this and training camp?

So Monahan wouldn't even be eligible since he played over 70 games in the NHL regular season last year.

A fractured rib might keep him out of development camp but not the training camp.
It will be just under 2 months from injury when development camp opens so I would doubt he would be taking part in it. Ribs heal slow unless you are pretty much immobile 24/7. Also depending on where the fracture was, normal breathing is painful for a good while. Heavy breathing from exercise and drills could be significantly painful.

Don't see any reason he wouldn't. The Flames can pay his expenses now at least.

It would be a really bad decision not to attend.
I don't think JG makes too many bad hockey decisions.

Sunday July 6th: 9am-4pm
Monday July 7th: 9am-4pm
Tuesday July 8th: 9am-4pm
Wednesday July 9th: 9am-4pm
Thursday July 10th: 9am-4pm
Friday July 11th: 9am-4pm
Starts earlier this years as last year started on the 10th.
Not sure if fitness testing is on the 4th or the 3rd as they have the ice for longer on the first day. Last year fitness testing was at U of C but I would not be surprised if they did it in the new Performance Training Centre at Winsport that just opened this year.
Also all ice times are in arena b (Joan Snyder Arena). Assuming this is done for the NHL sized ice. Limited seating in this rink so it is advisable to get their early for the scrimmage days that have not been announced yet. Last year for the weekend scrimmage the stands (200ish seats) filled up fast and fans lined the rink three or four rows deep.
Can't wait for the prospects to hit the ice!
|
Times have been changed a little. Looks like on ice days are now from 5th to 9th. Also a note that the the ice times called "CALGARY FLAMES DEVELOPMENT CAMP" are for the camp while "CALGARY FLAMES" ice times are likely for the group of prospects working out together during the whole summer.

With the Huska hire in Adirondack, it wouldn't surprise me if defenceman Jesse Lees got invited to development camp. Draft eligible last year, but passed over.

Only reason I think he wouldn't is if he is taking classes to get his degree. I think I remember hearing him say that was his plan this summer.
