Wow Butler's agent is probably doing cartwheels right now as he's probably going to get himself a deal in the $3.5 million/season range. Terrible deal because it throws the market off as agents of 3rd pairing defensemen are going to use this as an example in negotiating.

Wow brutal contract. He was going to get that much from someone and I was praying it wouldn't be the Flames. One of the worst Corsi players in the league this year

Unbelievable. Don't get me wrong he's an ok defenceman but 6 years at $5 million?
At the very most I would have game him 3 years at $4 million.

That bridge contract is going to cost the Flames a lot of cap space moving forward. A Roman Josi type contract would be looking pretty good right now.

			Just for fun.
MacDonald: GP: 82 G: 4 A: 24 P: 28 ESP: 16 +/-: -22 TOI/G: 24:37 PP: 2:52 SH: 2:22 Bks: 242 Hits: 69 Gva: 64

Butler: GP:82 G: 2 A: 14 P: 16 ESP: 15 +/-: -23 TOI/G: 20:15 PP: 0:20 SH: 2:41 Bks:211 Hits: 68 GVA: 69

Then the advanced stats:

MacDonald: Corsi: -13.26 Corsi Rel: -19.5 Off Zone Start: 48.8% Off Zone Finish: 49%

Butler: Corsi: -13.61 Corsi Rel: -8.9 Off Zone Start: 41.3% Off Zone Finish: 46.1

So MacDonald puts up worse numbers than Butler, but has much more favourable Offensive zone starts (48.8% vs 41.3%). This is like giving Butler a 6 year, $30 million dollar contract and then sheltering his defensive zone time.

Also judging by most advanced stats he has been the Flyers worst d-man since they acquired him: http://www.extraskater.com/players/o...team=phi&pos=D

I'm all for Butler getting a hefty pay raise...on someone else's team. If Butler gets 3.5m with the Flames I'll be very upset.

			Awful deal. Wow.
This won't set the market for Butler, Burke is a much better negotiator than Homer - I hope! If not then bye bye Butler.

If I was Butler's agent though I go to UFA with this as the exact comparison.

Pretty much identical stats except for power play points which can be attributed to Butler getting no PP time while MacDonald played almost 3 minutes per game.

Looking at how identical their statistics are it actually makes me sad we couldn't move Butler at the deadline considering Philly gave up a 2nd and a 3rd for MacDonald.

Yeah that's fine, he has earned his right to test the market but no way he gets 5 mill per or anything even close to that from Burke atleast.

I can't wait for the day the Flyers toil in mediocrity for a decade. Holmgrem signs such horrible contracts, yet his teams always find a way to stay competitive. What an odd contract.

Until things stabilize, these signings are going to force teams to keep crappy players since an upgrade wouldn't be worth it.
