Canada Post employees went on strike during a global recession, in an age where digital is rapidly replacing a lot of other services that we used to take for granted. They basically cut off their own feet.
People converted bill delivery, bill payment, banking, as much as they could, to digital en masse. Those who converted to digital will never go back to delivery by Canada Post.

Its not the current carriers that are impacted, its the future ones. They're not firing anyone, just wont rehire people as the current ones retire. I think the article says over X years, 15,000 will retire, but they'll only rehire 7,000 new carriers.
And I don't think the cutoff for home vs. superbox delivery was 1990. I've lived in two 1987 houses, both had superboxes, and a 1979 house that is still home delivered (all same community). I'd peg the change at 1986 or so based on this large sample size of reliable scientific data

85¢ for domestic mail? A letter from the US to Canada is the same, or maybe even a penny or two cheaper

Well, I already know where I'll have to go to pickup my mail once this happens to me. I live in a cul-de-sac, 2nd house from the corner and across the intersecting street is a corner store. It is also where they kids go to catch the bus. So, bring it on!

That does seem expensive until you stop to realise that you can send a letter from Victoria to Halifax for that price, and a penny a day is pretty good!

Your mail doesn't go to a store, it goes to a community box.
Knowing CP, they'll install it in the most out of the way location based on where they can get land to use.

Does Canada Post still contract out mail delivery for super boxes, or is it done by actual employees?

Hmm.. how does site selection work for the supermailbox? it's kind of marked out when new burbs are built, but for older neighborhoods, it'll suck if you're the lucky winner of a giant red box sprouting up on your front lot.

The best thing about the superbox is not having to worry about being sued by Canada Post for a slip n' fall for not being bothered to shovel my walk.
This is also the best part about being on the non-walk side of the street with a monowalk.

I think that Canada post should get a zepplin per city with 100's of advanced super cannons that can fire the mail through peoples windows.
I would pay for that service.

I'm pretty sure it's contracted out. For my mail it's always the same lady and her 80's RAV4.

A sensible compromise would be phasing out the superbox contractors and replacing them with the unionized posties that used to do home deliveries.

Why?
If its all about cost cutting measures and building efficiencies then the superbox contractors are probably the best route.
Probably the best thing to do is to completely shut down any kind of physical delivery and force electronic where they can and for the few that can't do electronic put a Canada Post pickup in every convenience store.
Plus the superbox delivery would probably be a part time job and not worth the $25.00 an hour that the mail carriers get now.

They all work 5 days a week (unless they are sick or injured). Also it isn't possible for them to save up mail for a few days and then deliver it, unless they are taking bags of mail home with them.

Ah, milk bags. The best part about milk bags is when my dad would run out the door for work and not see the bags between the two doors and stomp them.
