Not to mention they are UFA's, why would Toronto do this?

heck, I would do Stajan, Stempniak, Culkin for a 1st
Yes, disregard that proposal. I tinkered with it too much and completely lost the plot.

I think my logic for including the 1st was that I was initially going to take JM Liles off their hands. The original proposal was:

Stajan (pending UFA) + Stempniak (pending UFA)

For

Liles (terrible contract) + Kulemin (pending UFA) + Gardiner

The logic from the Toronto side is:

-Stajan is an emergency stop gap centre & only necessary until Bolland & Bozak are healthy. Acquiring him fills a temporary need.

-Stempniak would add secondary scoring and is an upgrade on Kulemin, who is struggling and is a serious whipping boy. Rental upgrade.

-Liles is Liles & they ditch him for cap flexibility.

Gardiner is the centrepiece of the deal for the Flames. Kulemin would fill in on RW until his deal expires this summer & Liles either plays, gets buried in the minors or is bought out.

I think I'll leave the armchair GM thing to the pros.

My take on this. I'm going to try and remain focused on the rebuild and not try and make some crazy trades where we completely rob the other team blind. I'll try and recoup players that fit in the long term and focus on players that have the certain qualities you want your players to emulate.

Trade one - Mike Cammalleri to Ottawa - Codi Ceci (RD) 6'2, 203

Ottawa gets that top six forward they desperately need to stay in the playoff race. Calgary gets back a solid young defender who is close to stepping in and could be a top four guy for the Flames down the road.

Trade two - Lee Stempniak and Dennis Wideman to Montreal for Brian Gionta and Mike McCarron (RW) 6'5, 229 and a 3rd round pick

Montreal is in a position to have a go at a playoff run. They could use Stempniak's size, grit and tenacity up front, and Wideman's all around skill on the backend. Montreal is also facing a world of hurt next season on the blueline. They could use a veteran presence like Wideman to eat up some minutes and guide some of their youngsters about to make the jump. The Flames eat Gionta's salary and get a great young prospect in McCarron and in a position they desperately need (RW).

Trade three - Kris Russell and TJ Galiardi to Dallas for Brett Ritchie (RW) 6'3, 209

Dallas fortifies their blueline and gets a very effective role player for a push to the playoffs. Calgary gets another big prospect on the right side.

Trade four - Matt Stajan and Chris Butler to Toronto for Jake Gardiner (D) 6'2, 184 and JM Liles (D) 5'10, 185

Toronto gets a center they need to stay in the playoff mix. We also include a defenseman for depth, one that will hopefully help expose the Leafs for the frauds they are! Calgary gets a good defenseman for the future and helps Toronto out with their cap.

Spring sees the team sign Arnold, Agostini, Gaudreau and Gillies.

Come the off season I go out of my way to sign Dave Bolland and Steve Ott to replace the leadership we let walk. I'd be willing to overpay for both just to get their experience and attitude in the dressing room. Say all you want about these guys, but they both hate to lose and make sure their team mates embrace that themselves. I'd also go after Devin Setoguchi for the RW, and then Matt Niskanen and Matt Greene for the blueline. All of these players are obviously bridge players, but they bring the right attitudes that I think will be the right example for the players coming up.

I won't bother with a lineup, as there are so many young players coming in that it is possible for a great deal of upheaval. Instead I'll just throw out a possible depth chart.

LW: Glencross, Baertschi, Gaudreau, MacDermid, Agostino, Ferland, Klimchuk
Center: Bolland, Ott, Monahan, Colborne, Backlund, Knight, Reinhart, Granlund, Arnold
RW: Hudler, Setoguchi, Jones, McGrattan, McCarron, Ritchie, Poirier, Hanowski, Harrison
D: Giordano, Brodie, Smid, Niskanen, Gardiner, Greene, Liles, Breen, Ceci, Ramage, Wotherspoon, Sieloff
G: Berra, Ramo, Oliver, Gillies

The idea is to continue to move the veterans as the kids step forward and prove they are ready for greater responsibility. Glencross, Hudler, Jones, Smid, Bolland, Ott, Setoguchi, Niskanen, Greene and Liles all get dealt at some point to keep the picks and prospects coming in and the system fully stocked.

One last trade that I mulled over was one that would be certain to raise some eyebrows and be controversial. I considered trading Backlund, Baertschi and our 2014 1st round pick to Florida for 6'6, 221 RW Jimmy Hayes and 6'4 200 RD Alex Petrovic and Florida's 2015 1st rounder. That would give Florida two lottery picks in 2014 and a chance to retool quickly. This would give the Flames two lottery picks in 2015, and a serious shot at McDavid. I decided there was too much risk in it for the Flames, but it is a bold move that recoups a couple of players who fill holes in the system, and are ready to step in right now, while working from a position of strength. The thought of two shots at McDavid is something to consider, but again, too much risk.

Flame away.

You move veterans if/when prospects make them expendable. You don't move veterans to make room for prospects for the hell of it.

After the house cleaning and Burke's statement of his desires I decided to make some tweaks to a Burkeian retooling.

Mike Cammalleri [$3.0] to Ottawa - Codi Ceci (RD) 6'2, 203

Ottawa is still in the mix for the playoffs but they need help up front. Cammalleri is a great fit for Ottawa and is more of an eastern conference player. Ceci is a great young prospect on the blueline who could develop into a top four defenseman that Calgary needs. His size and right handed shot are the qualities that make him a serious target.

Lee Stempniak [$2.5] and Sven Baertschi for Chris Stewart (6’2, 228) [$4.15] and Sam Kurker (6’1, 207)

I think this is a swap that helps both teams out. Calgary gets that big bodied RW for the immediate future and another RW prospect for down the road. St. Louis gets some cap relief and a player they are familiar with in Stempniak, a guy that will be able to fill the loss of Stewart in the short term. They also get Baertschi for the long term, which may be attractive to the Blues because of the Rattie factor. My concern he is the Blues would be afraid to make this deal as it makes them smaller and easier to play against.

Mikael Backlund [$1.5] and Markus Granlund to Minnesota for Charlie Coyle (6’3, 221) [$900] and Danny Heatley [$7.5]

The Wild aren't out of the playoff picture but are on the cut line. They could make a couple of moves to improve, but are cash strapped. Moving Heatley's big salary would be a bonus for them. A Backlund for Heatley swap would certainly make sense for them financially. The kicker is the compensation. Would Minnesota be willing to cough up Coyle to move Heatley? I think the inclusion of Mikael Granlund's brother might just get them thinking about that and make the move.

Jiri Hudler [$4.0] and Max Reinhart and 2014 1st to NY Islanders for Kyle Okposo (6’0, 216) [$2.8] and Ryan Pulock

The Islanders are out of the mix again, but they believe they have a good team that should be able to compete for a playoff spot. All that is missing is some veteran leadership. I think Hudler is the type of guy that helps out in that department. For the Flames they get a tough RW with some size that is hard to play against and that can score. The Flames also get another blueline prospect with some size and skill, a guy that should top out in the top four. To really make this deal hard for the Islanders to turn down Max Reinhart and the Flames 1st in the upcoming draft are included. I think this is too much for the Islanders to turn down, and as an added bonus it gives them a serious shot at collecting all of the Reinharts.

At the deadline Stajan, Russell and Galiardi are all moved for the best picks they can get in the upcoming draft.

Come spring the team signs Agostino, Arnold, Gaudreau and Gillies. The free agency push comes and the Flames overpay to get David Bolland, Matt Niskanen and Matt Greene. The depth chart then looks something like this.

LW: Glencross (6.1, 200), Gaudreau (5.8, 170), Bouma (6.1, 210), Ferland (6.2, 210), Hanowski (6.2, 210), Agostino (6.1, 200), Klimchuk (5.11, 180)

C: Bolland (6.0, 185), Monahan (6.2, 200), Coyle (6.3, 221), Colborne (6.5, 220), Knight (6.2, 200), Jankowski (6.3, 190)

RW: Chris Stewart (6.2, 228), Kyle Okposo (6.0, 216), David Jones (6.2, 210), Brian McGrattan (6.4, 235), Bill Arnold (6.0, 205), Emile Poirier (6'1, 185), Sam Kurker (6'1, 207)

LD: Mark Giordano (6.0, 205), TJ Brodie (6.1, 186), Ladislav Smid (6.3, 210), Shane O'Brien (6.3, 230), Chris Breen (6.7, 224), Pat Sieloff (6'0, 200), Tyler Wotherspoon (6.2, 203)

RD: Dennis Wideman (6.0, 200), Matt Niskanen (6.0, 200), Matt Greene (6'3, 232), John Ramage (6.0, 200), Codi Ceci (6'2, 203), Ryan Pulock (6'1, 211)

G: Yogi Berra, Karri Ramo, Joni Ortio, John Gillies

Flame away.

That Islanders deal looks awful for Calgary and I am not a fan of Hudler or Reinhart. I don't give up the 1st alone for those two guys let alone adding in pieces.

I don't think that Minny gives up much at all to move Heatly since his deal is done this year. They would need something of value in return to move a guy like Coyle and Granlund being a brother of one of their guys isn't enough in my books.

I like the Cammalieri deal and think it is a possibility from Ottawa side as well.

Not sure I like giving up Sven unless for something more sure than a 50/50 effort guy like Stewart. I like his size but hate his 0 work ethic and love of taking games/weeks off.

After the trade deadline we know that many of our better veteran players will be gone. Cammallari, Stempniak, Stajan, Butler?
What ever happens we are losing our leadership in many places. Strength, a voice in the community/locker room, in size....Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau and the Sharks are perfect targets.

Both 34 years old with 1 year remaining on their $7,000,000 and $6,900,000 contracts. They have slightly dropped in goals but not in making solid plays and getting the puck to their team mates. And they are still able to burst with speed.

The Sharks currently have $1,335,000 in cap space. They will have $26,700,000 (average) going into Free Agency. With 16 RFA and 8 UFA they will have a lot to deal with especially the contract of young Jason Demers who will certainty be asking for more than 2.5 mil possibly even 3 mil. Dan Boyle will very likely return to the Sharks. They can't Marleau and Thornton both at the contracts they are at currently. Also with centers like Couture, Pavelski, Hertl, or Wingles being shoved to the wing or forced on lower lines it becomes an annoyance or peeve to keep them down. Freeing up one or two roster spots gets the players in better roles to grow.

So the idea would be acquiring 1 or possibly both Thornton and Marleau. Trading for their rights at the trade deadline or right before Free Agency.

1.
Glenncross LW $2,550,000
Wideman D $5,250,000

Thornton C/LW UFA
Marleau C/LW UFA
2014 2nd round pick

2.
Wideman RD $5,250,000
Grandlund C $975,000
2014 3rd round pick

Thornton C/LW-RFA or Marleau C/LW-RFA
Demers RD-RFA

3.
D.Jones RW- $4,000,000
2014 3rd round pick

Thornton C/LW-RFA or Marleau C/LW-RFA

Scenario 1:
Acquire both players rights. Assuming they will both sign (which I think they would because they are players who respect the business of hockey).

Sign Joe Thornton on 2 year $5,500,000 contract
Sign Patrick Marleau on 2 year $5,500,000 contract

Both players would spend their time mainly on the first or on the second to guide players in places. Help to captain the team under Mark Giordano. Get the special teams going strong. In addition the $11,000,000 helps bring the Flames to the cap floor with out having to spend it on useless lesser players.

Scenario 2 or 3

Sign Thornton or Marleau for 3 years at $5,250,000
Sign Jason Demers 5 year $2,750,000 contract

Getting one of the two guys is alright and would certaintly fill that top ling wing role untill we get an NHL ready rookie there.

Yes? No? Maybe so?

I hope Ducks look for veteran help and the Flames can snag one of Smith-Pelly or Etem. A nice young RW to add to the fold.

No chance Ottawa does that, cash strapped teams don't move players on ELCs for pending high paid UFAs and Ceci is looking very good for Ottawa right now playing 20+ mins a night

No thanks to trading Stempniak who could fetch a 2nd rounder and Baertschi who still has a lot of potential despite many hear writing him off for Chris Stewart who cares sometimes but usally doesn't and a throw in like Kurker

Don't think Minnesota moves Coyle just so they can get rid of Heatley who they are getting rid of July 5th for free anyways. Probably the most realistic deal.

Not a fan of trading 2014 first as it will most likely be a top 5 pick and a prospect like the Flames haven't seen since Monahan if not better. And Okposo looks really good with Tavares so the Islanders would probably be hesitant to move him.

Burke should target Patrick Berglund right now. Having a really poor season for a player with talents. Could be a really good buy low situation.

Shawn Matthias as well. May as well be a right handed colborne with a more polished finish to his game but worth a look. Adding those two players alone would address the size issues.

Still really pulling for a Cammy to Ottawa for a Cowan or ceci type deal.

He has fair market value these days. Much better than the bag of popcorn and half drank can of soda pop he had for value during the Brent Sutter days.

Expiring 3.5m contract for a decent 2-3 center can fetch something nice on deadline day.

I like it minus the last trade. Let Colborne play there, no need for Matthias on this team.

The D is shotty, but hopefully we begin to address that at the draft.
