Did the Blues honestly think they could get Bouwmeester for a Leopold price? If true, that's sad. I would have to think this wouldn't affect their decision to continue to pursue Bouwmeester, though, as Leopold does not fill the role Bouwmeester does, not even close.

It sounds like it's more of an internal budget thing. Flames better be willing to eat some salary on JBO if they want a great return.

Detroit just signed DeKeyser. Could be they're out of the running as well.

If they think that kid is going to give them any short term help, well then Ken Holland is no longer running that team.

When is the last time a player made the jump directly from college to the NHL? For that matter, the only league players make the jump from is the AHL 99% of the time and I can tell you from having seen DeKeyser play several times that he is nowhere near that 1%.

Completely untrue.

This is completely true.
Leopold is not a top pairing guy. As well as he played for the Flames for a few years, he probably wasn't then either. However, he is much more than a bottom pairing guy. He can run a PP, is decent in his own zone and has a very, very good first pass.

Look at some Buffalo fan reactions on HF... they've been calling him Joran Leopol all season.

In 2005/06 he had more TOI than Phaneuf and Hamrlik. In 2003/04 he had more TOI, than Toni Lydman (who went to Sabres after lockout and led them in TOI on that ECF team). If memory serves me, he also was top pairing guy for USA national team back then. He was legit top pairing guy in his prime (2003-06).

I like that a lot. We can potentially have 2 picks in the top 5

They must be splitting it very evenly if that is 2nd most. That would be 4th on the Flames. (Jbo, Wideman, Gio)

So if Leo was playing the second most minutes, would that mean he's good or the reason they are where they are?

Leopold is a depth defenseman whereas Bouwmeester is a top line guy. They don't really affect one another since they play different roles.

They may play different roles, but if a team thinks they can get away with a Leopold instead of a Bouwmeester, then that's one less team the Flames can negotiate with. While Leopold for a 2nd was about right, it puts into perspective once again the Iggy deal was a robbery. That's frustrating to me.
