That is often a big chink of the price - how well a tv can upscale, either SD to HD or between 720 and 1080; and then you get into deinterlacing. Better software to do this costs a bit more and that is where part of the difference in costs exists.

I have a Sony XBR8 and it it does a really good job of upscaling.

And LED sets are still LCD sets - they just use and LED as a backlight which provides a wider colour gamut (as well as other benefits - thinner TVs, etc)

Man I wish I had 6K to spend on a TV.
My bad. Panasonic did buy quite a few Pioneer patents, but it appears that was not one of them. Crazy of them not to. They make great plasmas on their own, so I suppose spending what i guess would be a lot of money for a slight improvement on what they already do well wouldn't be worth it.

I've never been a fan of Sharp. : /

Anyone have this TV? The reviews on the futureshop website seem positive. On sale today.

Personally, I'd spend a bit more for the Samsung or wait for the Samsung to go on sale. Not a fan of the lower Sony models

That's not really a lower end Sony model. It would be about 4th down from the series HX900 the HX800 and the HX700 so I'd guess it's about equivalent with a Samsung 6500. The reason it's cheap is that Sony does a mark down for last years models. I bought a HX800 last year at their year end closing price and it's a great TV. Great contrast and great colour and motion flow. Maybe try to bargain for free glasses and or a 3D blu ray player since it's a discontinued model . A similar model is also on sale at Best Buy for the same price.

I have this TV. Got it right before the super bowl. Paid $999, and got a free 3-D starter kit, which included two pairs of active 3-D glasses and a free 3d Blu-Ray. At Best Buy. So far so good. It is discontinued, but use to be a $2200 TV.

Yeah, but I personally like the 6 series over it for a very similar price.

Having said that, the high end one is beautiful

Just picked up a 65" Panasonic VT30 Plasma tonight for $3K at Visions. According to my K&W Audio contact that is cost. Clearing them out to make room for the 2012s. The McLeod trail Visions has 5 more left if anyone is interested. This is the 2011 flagship Panny...a beautiful TV!

^Nice choice. At that price it's got me considering an upgrade.

If you do upgrade don't get sucked into the visions warranty. Rumor has it they won't be around much longer to honor it.

Crazy. Sounds around is done too. Seems odd they'd both go that close together.

Just wanted to gauge what everybody thought about the whole LED vs Plasma debate.

I am looking for a new tv mostly for sports/movies/video games and wanted to see what everybody thought.

So LED or Plasma?

The guy that recently came to calibrate my LED thinks that if you want the best performance for motion, you want to go Plasma. If you want energy savings, better black/white and overall color performance then go LED.

Of course this is an extremely simplistic statement to make given the large variety of brands and models for each technology.

There are about a half dozen multi-page threads discussing this already, so you'll get a lot of info via searching.

I prefer plasma myself but you need a dark room. Plasma screens are necessarily glossy and many resemble a mirror in a bright room.

Not always true. We have a 6-year old 42" Panasonic plasma and one of it's big selling features (for me) was the matte screen. I hate glossy screens and bezels!

Since I'm not in the market for a TV these days I couldn't say if any current plasma sets offer matte screens though
