Default HDTV Reviews

I am looking to buy a new TV and everywhere I look, reviews are different and prices are different. I know what I am looking for, I just want to make sure I am getting an honest review before I commit to a purchase.

I am hoping that posters can review/recommend their TVs so that I can figure out which one to get.

I am sure these reviews will help other CPers as well.

I currently have a 46" Samsung LCD but am going to give it to my sister for a house warming gift because I want to get a new 60" LED smart tv (probably 3D but not a determining factor).

Please help me/others out with your input.

This might belong best in the Tech. sub group. I picked up a 55" Vizio LED, and I am happy with it, except that PS3 and Wii games look horrible. That might just be the nature of LED TVs, since I had no problem with our older Panasonic LCD.

We had looked at Plasmas, but there was a lot of fuss about buzzing sounds and the fragileness of transporting them (i.e. for larger ones you're not supposed to lay them flat since the glass can potential break).

Save yourself the trouble and just buy a Samsung. The balance of price and picture quality can't be matched by anyone. I have 5 Samsungs displays in my home.

55" LCD
50" plasma
42" LED
42" LCD
23" LCD monitor

Not one dead pixel. Not one bad capacitor. Never a problem.

I just bought the Samsung 55" 8 series LED (UN55D8000), and its the greatest thing in the world. If I had to choose between the tv and stringing my wife's cat up by the tail, the tv would win hands down.. mind you, even a slice of pizza would win that battle.

Yeah I'm on my 3rd Samsung HDTV and never had a single issue. They've also apparently got some of the best smart tv software. I've seen it in action and it's pretty good (though not for me since I've got a HTPC).

I love my samsung. It's a UN55D6900 and I'm extremely happy with everything about it. I had a lot of issues looking for a TV too though, there are so many things you have to be careful about now.

The best site I found for in depth technical reviews was Television Info and the best site for user reviews I found was AVS Forum. I recommend shopping around a bit, picking out TV's that meet your budget and look great in the store. Then use the two resources above to get some more detailed information about them.

I found it hard looking for a new TV because salesmen will push you towards TV's where they get the best margin (if you shop where they make commission) and people that own TV's will be biased towards their purchase. But in the end was happy that I took my time.

I heard samsung was getting out of LCD's all together though - simply losing way too much money apparently.

If you want the best LCD, get a Sony HX900 series. A step down would be a Sony HX8xx or Samsung 8000. Nothing wrong with LG either.

I've got a pair of Dynex LCD tv's and they work great. My 42" works great and for $250 at the time, it's a joke (they are $300 now)

No they are splitting the company, making a new branch dedicated to TVs.

+ 1 for Samsung.

It is what I own. It is what I recommend to family members. Best bang for your buck.

I run a pawn shop, and I've seen a ton of TV's over the years. Samsung TV's hold up pretty well over time.

Still kicking myself in the ass for not buying the Pioneer Kuro Elite that we had come thru the store. Pioneer stopped making TV's. They sold their technology to Panasonic so if money was not a factor i'd likely buy a high end Panasonic over anything else.

I have 2 Panasonic plasmas and I love them so thumbs up there. I can't speak for their LED/LCD sets. I also own a 32" Samsung LCD, which is pretty old and pretty crappy...the speakers went pretty early on this unit.

I just helped my Dad buy a 55" Samsung 6900 LED for $1700 and it is awesome although I find the smart tv and 3D to be a gimmick...but Skype built in is pretty nice. For SmartTv stuff I would rather leave that to an external box (like Apple TV or Boxee).

My sisters all have Sony's and they have amazing pictures on them.

I am about to buy a 70" television...if Samsung made one I would probably go with that brand but Sharp is the only company selling an affordable 70" right now and they make good products so I'm going that route.

Brands that I prefer Panasonic (Plasma), Samsung, Sharp.

Online sources: avsforums and cnet and Amazon reviews

I thought Sharp has the Elite technology?

I'm pretty happy with my Sony, I've tried a coupe of other brands (not Samsung yet though) and always seem to go back, their upscaling of SD always seemed to be better.
