My recent camping trip has some spots covered in the fluff. The ranger said they had 2 "Cotton Fires" in the last few days

So the maples formed a union
And demanded equal rights.
"The oaks are just too greedy;
We will make them give us light."
Now there's no more oak oppression,
For they passed a noble law,
And the trees are all kept equal
By hatchet, axe, and saw.

Reactine prescription and Omnaris nasal spray have been my best friends the past several weeks. I have allergies as well but haven't been fazed much.

It is super flammable and great fun to light on fire, in a controlled safe setting of course!!! You can clear out one side of the road in the photo with one flick of a lighter, it burns super fast.

This is just a guess, but considering how wet it's been in the spring/summer the last few years (last year in particular), I suspect that the majority of poplar fluff has been taken off the trees by rain and washed down sewers, lessening the allergen significantly. But this year, we haven't had a good rain in a few weeks, which has allowed the fluff to accumulate and annoy the crap out of people with allergies.

Just got this email from school ..
Quote:
Campus Community Advisory
Poplar fluff and dry grass are fire hazards
We are writing to remind the community about the importance of being cognizant
of the potential for fires on the campus grounds and ensuring that ignition
sources are controlled.
The poplar fluff is very flammable and the grass is dry due to our current
heat wave. We have experienced two grass fires on campus within the last
two days which were the result of lit cigarettes igniting poplar fluff.
Thank you for sharing the responsibility of keeping our campus safe.

Some botanist-type person told me that the spring following a hard winter trees produce more pollen. Apparently they get stressed by a hard winter and try to reproduce like crazy to make up for it. Don't know if its true or not - but wow - its been a bad spring for fluff for sure.
