The indictment filed by Preet Bharara, the U.S. Attorney in Manhattan, charges Scheinberg, the founder of PokerStars, and Bitar, the founder of Full Tilt Poker, as well as nine other individuals, accusing them of operating illegal gambling businesses. Federal prosecutors also filed a civil lawsuit seeking $3 billion in civil money laundering penalties, alleging the online poker companies disguised money they received from U.S. poker players as payments to online merchants selling jewelry and golf balls.

Edit the first post, go to advanced.
I doubt this will kill the industry. It will mostly be a question of which smaller gambling site has the capability of taking on the people looking for a new poker site.
But it makes me wonder what will happen to all of the poker tv shows sponsored by these guys.

Canadians, I don't think, are directly affected.

I've been looking around the net trying to see what this means for us and it seems like we may still be able to play but americans wont. People are already saying this might reduce the WSOP online feed by 50%

Its not like the government was shutting these sites down on some kind of morality clause.

Gambling; if the government isn't screwing you, it's illegal.

Chances are the FBI just seized the .com domain names, kinda like how they did with some torrent/online streaming sites. The sites are probably still running if you can find a domain name that isn't US based.

The rough thing for us if we can still play is the cash flow into the site from the US will be missed as there were a lot of american fish there

Shutting down a domain is effectively like removing the street address sign for the company. Sure a lot of people won't make it to the site, but for now, its certainly still there.

This is such slimy business. A lot of the pressure to clamp down on online gambling is being driven by American Indians and Harrah's et al. I would venture a guess that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid was a driving force behind the legislation...

well i just cashed everything out of pokerstars just in case. wonder how many millions (billions?) of dollars are being cashed out today, this will really hurt them, shut down forever or not. Just need one of the 2nd rate poker sites to step up and they can clean up.

People in the States can get in, and apparently it's a matter of DNS updates at ISP's, or so I've heard.
