It all depends on their intent. If they want the tournament to bring together people of congruent cultures in a sports setting, that's not racist. If they're excluding non-Natives because they feel they're inferior, then that is racist. I would guess it's the former.

And I agree about deleting this thread.

You could always file a complaint with the Human Rights Commission that you feel they're excluding you from participating based on your race.

It's free, and the government will pay for your legal council.

Bigtime is right.

i do not have a problem with the tournament.

i just find it interesting that 'native only' is ok, but 'white only' is a no-no in our society.

"Native" refers to a defined ethnic group, the decendants of the indigenous peoples of North America designated by various treaties. "White" is a skin colour.

It is a double standard, but some double standard for minorities can make some sense. As already mentioned, it's about the intent of the event; and if any group needs community strengthening it's Canada's natives.
Instead of worrying about if it's racist, I would focus on how a tournament like this may give those kids team skills, cooperation, confidence, healthy lifestyles, a venue to release tension/aggression and many other great values gained in social groups and team sports.
The more native youths getting those skills, the better for us of all races.

Important point - if you want to have tournaments focused on a specific WHITE ethnic group there is no issue. As far as I know some of them exist - ie Scottish Highland Games

Yeah I think you get away with men's only fitness because everyone would assume it's a gay gym.

well thats the sound of the point going over your heads.

fact is, the gym would never exist, men are not allowed to have their own clubs.

women, chinese, native and so on are ok, but you would never get away with making a mens only "anything" club.

Yep right over my head. On the other hand, if I went to Men's Only Fitness nothing would go over my head, I'd make sure everything went right in.
