The only sane way to watch the superbowl or any NFL game is to record it on your pvr and start 30 minutes later so you can fastforward all those commercials.

At least in football, the stategy for the game continues on even inbetween plays. Time management is very important to a team's strategy. In fact it's one of the most important factors deciding whether a team will win or lose, when coming to the end of the game.

Interesting article. That an analysis I've always been interested in doing myself - but it would have involved sitting through too many football games. Heck, I never found there was enough action to keep my interest playing football let alone watching it. But, hey, to each their own.

I think for most superbowl-watchers, the game is really just a social event - their level of interest in the game itself is probably about the same as their interest in the commercials, and both are secondary to their interest in drinking beer with friends and eating chips and dip.

And really, if it wasn't for the social factor, how many people would watch sports of any kind?

I watch the majority of sports by myself- albeit the superbowl was with some family... For the most part though, the last thing I need is people yappin away while I'm trying to watch the game.

My wife is usually home when I'm watching sports, but leaves me alone.

Maybe I just take sports too serious.

With regards to the OP though, the superbowl is often the best 3-4 hours of tv viewing in the year for me.

At the end of the day, everyone likes their sports differently. I enjoy hockey and soccer because of the simplicity and continuity. They have one net on each side. A goal is scored by putting a ball or puck in the net. The stoppages only exist out of necessity, when rules are broken. Football and baseball, they're both one big stoppage until the action happens, and I prefer it the other way around. Football I can watch though, whereas baseball...noooot so much. At the end of the day, my differing opinion isn't enough for me to be tempted to start a thread about it....btw great video girlysports.

Over half the population of the US wasted their time Sunday...smashing every record ever for viewership.

Quote:
The game surpassed last year’s Super Bowl by 4.5 million viewers. That game, on CBS, reached the pinnacle of American television viewing by hitting 106.5 million total viewers, just half a million more than what had been television’s perennial audience champ, the finale of the series “M*A*S*H,” in 1983, which attracted 106 million viewers.

And of course, the Super Bowl numbers only include viewers watching in homes; they do not include parties watching in bars – or in the parking lot outside Cowboy Stadium in Dallas.

The figure for total number of viewers watching at least some part of the game also set a new record with 162.9 million, also well up from the previous record of 153.4 million last year. That puts the number watching the game well past one half of the total population of the United States – 308 million in the 2010 census.

And it doesn't come as a huge surprise considering the following each team has and that it was predicted the second the conference games were over.

The NFL is simply amazing. Haters can point out that there are only 14 minutes of actual action on the field all they want. Every other "exciting" sport is pretty envious of the NFL right now.

Personally, I think that the breaks in between plays adds to the drama. Late in the game when your team is driving down the field and needs a score to tie or take the lead on the road. Its third down and two. The QB breaks the huddle and the offense lines up on the line of scrimmage as the crowd noise starts to build and build. It doesn't get any better than that.

That has more to do with the NFL itself and not the Superbowl. I'd agree that the product on the field is still very strong, as is the atmosphere. I don't believe the intent of this article was to argue about the actual game of football, but the Superbowl and it's larger then life tone.

Keep in mind, when MASH aired, the population of the US was only 230ish million.

Also remember that the other TV options that night were extremely limited. For a good percentage of people it was a choice among 3 programs.

Yup, even a few years ago CSI was the highest rated show on TV and routinely drew 30 million viewers. Now the highest rated show on TV maybe hits 20 million.

Look at the TV ratings. The hype machine by the NFL is obviously working. Why wouldn't they take advantage of the huge ratings and milk as much advertising revenue as they possibly can?

Now if I was watching the Super Bowl at home I would find the extra commercials annoying. However, I'm usually at a house party with lots of other people. I take the extra commercial time to talk with my buddies, grab another beer, stuff my face, visit the bathroom, make sure the kids arn't trying to kill each other. I hardly noticed the extra commercials on Sunday.
