If you want something that's going to make you jump I recommend The Descent.
The ex loved horror movies, I wasn't a huge fan. I ended up buying this one because I thought it looked pretty cool. Really wish I hadn't.
I'll second Stir of Echos and Event Horizon. Both excellent movies.
I'll add:
- Scream 1 (and 4 was actually pretty good, too)
- Dog Soldiers (a bit cheesy, but I really like it for some reason)
- Psycho (original)
- Leprechaun (for the old 80s/90s slasher style)
What's the movie where that killer is walking on all fours and has needles on his fingers. I haven't seen it but the animated gif of him walking kind of gave me the creeps.

The Poughkeepsie Tapes
Edit: The full movie is on youtube.

I've only watched it once when it first came out but I've hated clowns ever since. I tried watching it recently and only made it about 10 minutes in before seeing the clown and having to turn it off. I'll try again in another 20 years.

I have a good friend who is terrified of clowns. I love sending him pictures and videos of clowns, safe and horrifying. Although, all are horrifying to him. mwhuhahahaha
Really wanna check out American Horror Story but Shaw doesn't carry it. Has anyone watched it yet? Is it worth the $40 for the blu ray? I believe season Two starts on October 18 which is a completely different story in that the show is a mini series.
Because of this movie, my wife is no longer allowed to drink red wine during scary movies.
I'm the easiest person to scare, so my general rule for watching horror movies is that I keep nothing in my hands because I will throw it by the end.

I went to see this with my boyfriend and a friend. The friend and I, who both love horror movies, absolutely hated it. For me though that was partially because I went into it expecting a "real" scary horror movie, which it definitely was not. My boyfriend loved it though, but he doesn't like horror movies, so maybe he was pleasantly surprised to find out that this wasn't going to terrify him.

Just curious, do you wish you hadn't because it scared the pants off you or because you thought it was crap?
I've seen a lot of horror movies and I simply don't see the appeal of this movie. I wouldn't say it was terrible but it wasn't anything more than mediocre IMO.
I really enjoyed [REC] and [REC]2. Watched Let Me In last night. It was pretty good. Haven't seen the original but I hear that one is better. I saw the first half hour of 1408 and that was looking pretty creepy. Going to have to finish watching that.
Horror is the worst genre in the film industry, so much crap. Most movies are of the teen slasher variety and/or loud noise to startle category. Neither are scary and shouldn't be called 'horror', but 'startle', because that's all they do. I thought Insidious was particularly guilty of this. Flash image of scary thing and blare loud ass noise. Meh. It's the cheapest way to create tension. Oh, also there is torture porn horror which is only worth mentioning just to say how terrible it is.
Also I find horror to be particularly bad at holding up over time. So many movies that were scary when you were young turn into cheesy laughing stocks on second viewing as an adult.
It's really annoying because I happen to like horror movies a lot but honestly only 1/10 is any good.

HIGHLY recommend Jacob's Ladder and Let the Right One In if you haven't seen them yet.
This. Jacob's Ladder messed with my head for weeks after I first saw it. I don't know if I would call if terrifying so much as disturbing, but it just gets to you. I actually watched it again about a year ago and although it has lost some of its potency it's still pretty damn screwed up.

I'm a wimp when it comes to horror movies, but I'm making it my goal to watch every movie on this list. I'm at 8 right now haha. http://www.imdb.com/list/kJxp6JzoieY/
Several of the classics listed there will be broadcast on Turner Classic Movies on Halloween. I definitely recommend checking some of them out if you haven't seen them.
Also, AMC will be pumping out 70s/80s horror/slasher flicks starting tomorrow and leading up until Halloween. Friday the 13th, Halloween, Childs Play, that sort of thing. Should be stellar.
Sinister is suppose to be good, sitting at 82% on RT. I think it releases everywhere this weekend.
As someone who isn't a fan of the genre (for reasons similar to Burninator), I thought it was better than some of the other junk in the genre (like the latest Paranormal Activity) but still not very good. I appreciate that it was somewhat logical, but it was also very predictable (especially if you've watched the trailiers).
And yeah, it kinda fits the "startle" genre that Burninator described. I enjoyed the comic relief though.
The Grudge scared the crap outta me ( and the power outage at my work when I was in the stairwell the next day didn't help.
Still can't bring myself to swim very far in the ocean thanks to Jaws.
Paranormal Activity (the first one)
The original The Hills Have Eyes was pretty creepy as well (maybe it was the lack of a soundtrack?)
