The Ring or the The Exorcist. The scene in the extended version of the Exorcist where she crawls down the stairs with her back arched and her stomach facing the ceiling ****ed me up for months when I was a kid.
I saw The Exorcist for the first time when I was 20, and I didn't shut my lights off when I went to bed that night. And it's still scary.
The 1978 version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers is creepy. The original Frankenstein and The Bride of Frankenstein are both masterpieces, but I consider them tragedies rather than horror.

I'm someone who just got into horror a few years ago - I couldn't watch The Walking Dead by myself. I'll make a list some are comedy horror but fun anyway.
Lesbian Vampire Killers
Ravenous
Tucker And Dale Vs Evil
Zombieland
Dawn of the Dead
28 Days
28 Weeks Later
Black Sheep
Slither
Stake land
Dead Snow
More suspense than horror, but imo Stir of Echoes is one of the more underrated freaky movies. It came out the same weekend as The Blair Witch Project and was largely ignored. It's a pretty smart movie in a genre that often boils down to loud noises at unexpected times.
Horror movie guy here. There's a big difference between scariest and good horror movies. Here are some of my favourite horror movies
Off the top of my head, in no real particular order:
Jacob's Ladder
The Shining
Let The Right One In (Swedish original)
Silence of the Lambs*
Poltergeist
Rosemary's Baby
Sleepaway Camp - 80s cheesy horror movie. But very strong and a GREAT ending.
Alien
28 Days Later
Texas Chainsaw Massacre - I like both the '74 and 2000s one
Nightmare on Elm Street
Halloween
Sixth Sense
HIGHLY recommend Jacob's Ladder and Let the Right One In if you haven't seen them yet.
For me, The Exorcist doesn't stand the test of time. I know it is regarded as the best horror movie of all time, but I just can't take it serioulsy anymore. I don't find it scary as I did when I was under 10 years old...I actually find it humerous. Regan's lines can easily be brushed off.

I'm a wimp when it comes to horror movies, but I'm making it my goal to watch every movie on this list. I'm at 8 right now haha. http://www.imdb.com/list/kJxp6JzoieY/
It isn't particularly scary, but I love An American Werewolf in London. It's a really well crafted movie and holds up pretty well to this day. Don't bother with An American Werewolf in Paris though (Spoiler alert! It sucks).
