Lol good lord.
He's quite no good at putting himself into the shoes of a journalist - his chosen profession - so it's pretty understandable that he would be unable to do this.

Not to mention the Oilers fluked out with arguably the easiest path to the finals in decades. A crappy Kings team in round 1. A beat up Canucks team playing their 3rd string goalie in round 2. Opponents pulling complete no-shows in several games. I highly doubt that scenario is gonna be repeated next year.
Also, Lightning goalie --> Vasilevskiy
Panthers goalie --> Bob
Oilers goalie --> Stinker

Skinner is the only Oiler I'm rooting for to get out of there and go on to have a Dubnyk type career in a Minnesota type market.

My hope is that they are forced to ride him to free agency and either pay a massive price ($15mm or so) or watch him walk. McCrybaby follows the next year, waiting to sign a new deal until he sees what management does (whatever it is, it will be done poorly) and then walks it to Toronto or another big market.
I'm not sure Pissy will stay even if they are willing to pay him $15M, I mean, he'd have to stay for another EIGHT years!

The cap is going up 5% 2025/26 (escalator clause as mentioned by Elliott Friedman) so it will be around $92M.

They are in cap jail & will remain so if they resign the two studs.

They don’t want to admit it, but the only time to maximize the asset of both of them via trade is right now, on those contracts.

They would receive an insane bounty, but it will not happen.
That is actually my biggest fear is that someone smart takes over there and trades both those guys to set them up for multiple championships. Thank God that won't happen.

Huberdeau for Draisaitl. Has to happen now to make sense.

The problem is that even though the perceived value is there - who could part with the value and still be competitive? Edmonton and all the other contenders want the same thing, high end players on great deals. If you're not a contender you won't be looking to lock up a 28yo Draisaitl at a 15m contract just to waste the rest of his prime.

I just don't see a team that is more desperate to win in 2025 than the Oilers. No one will give up futures for a player that's in his last year until the deadline or if the Oilers retain, but the Oilers can't do that if they want to win with McDavid.

So I guess you're right that the smart move is to cut their losses and trade both those guys. Maybe McDavid gets you Stutzle+ and you trade Draisaitl retained to LA for Byfield+. Not sure, do those teams even make those trades? Otherwise you get a bunch of futures and you might as well trade Bouchard. One way or another this thing is burning down in the next 2 years, it comes down to attempting another run - or admitting you're not good enough and rebuilding.

I don't see teams lining up to gut their teams for either of these guys. McDavid won't do any better somewhere else if they decimate the depth chart for him. Since McDavid and Draisaitl joined the Oilers - literally every team who has won the cup hasn't needed them. The only way its worth it is to add them as UFAs, then you're looking pretty good.

I'd drive Huby to Rogers Arena and deliver the press conference.

I think it's kind of hard to trade a player of McDavid's value as it's going to be quantity over quality because McDavid isn't going to sign an extension with organizations that aren't built to win now. If you get say three first round picks there's a very good chance every single one of them is in the 20-30 area and teams contending for the cup usually don't have a cupboard full of elite young prospects. They would end up with some really good players but they won't be McDavid and that organization could just barely win with McDavid and Draisaitl so I can't see them being competitive replacing them with quantity even if it's good quantity. Same goes for Draisaitl as he's got a 10 team NTC so what for example could the Bruins offer the Oilers? A handful of late 1st round picks? Heck the Bruins didn't have much exciting to offer for Lindholm.

If we can extrapolate Huby into multiple high draft picks and prospects and throw a boat anchor contract Edmonton's way, I'd be happier than an Oilers fan before Game 7.

I know it's an obvious joke but this would be awful.
Cement the Flames as a mid team with bad draft positioning for years and no shot at winning a cup too

I bet this is why Ken Holland skipped town. He doesn't want to be the GM that lets them stay too long and has nothing to show for it. Or be the GM that trades them to early and gets eaten alive by that fan base.

His contract was up anyway.

Sorry if this has already been discussed, but with the NHL awards tonight I thought I'd point out that a no good "journalist" is the only one who didn't vote for any members of the Cup winning team for Conn Smythe. Matheson had his votes McDavid first (like most) followed by Hyman and Bouchard.

Gretzky got disgruntled and asked to be moved because of the Paul Coffey situation, he became very sour on Sather and Pocklington.

Could it be that Draisaitl is the Coffey. When the Oilers who are in cap hell can't make him the most expensive on the Oilers, because frankly he would be if he resigned, surpassing McDavids $12.5, at least temporarily.

Can you see the McDavid Press conference in a couple of years.

McDavid - "I promised Drai I wouldn't do this"

Que fake crocodile tear.

Lets be really clear here, even if Draisaitl does do a discount, the union is going to put tremendous pressure on him and his agent to set the next standard for star players until McDavid comes along and blows it away.
