the bay signed 50 year leases at $1 to $3 per square foot, as malls needed massive anchor tenants to get funding to build the mall.

The Bay realized they could re-lease that space for $100+ per square foot to cosmetics company, and they became a landlord. It was a good business, but not enough to counter that the rest of the space was essentially non-producing.

In the UK and Japan you will see large department stores similar to the Bay that have a bunch of smaller niche branded clothing stores within their store. I assume that is a similar concept taken to clothing and that the 'department store' ends up becoming a bit like a landlord subleasing tiny chunks of their space to brands that want a more substantial presence. I thought that would be where the Bay went, potentially adding restuarants as well, but perhaps the landlords in Canada don't want the Bay to make that money.

The question is what happens iwth all the bay stores space? It took a long time to get the Sears space used, and it feels like the Bay was in every single shopping centre in canada.

Back in the 80's my aunt was an accountant at the Bay and one Saturday a month my mom would take us there to meet our aunt at the cafeteria for lunch. That was our most anticipated day every month as the toys and cool stuff on that floor was like going to an amusement park.

You're not big time until McDonalds is in town.

Firehouse subs on 4st and 20 ave SW recently opened.

Advertised as fresh subs with generous meat and cheese. They’re all served hot but they steam or something instead of toasted like subway.

It sucked. It was way overpriced. The toppings were the opposite of generous. The quality was mediocre at best.

I hate being too mean but it has zero appeal. I will not be going back. Ever. Some times a second chance is deserved. Not this place. I see no scenario where they redeem themselves.

Bar Burrito is actually not bad for fast food.

Huh. I've been to the one in Airdrie a couple of times, it's good.

I’ve been to the Okotoks one several times and like it as well. Always been fresh, fast, and good value for money IMO.

My dislike of Firehouse Subs is their fillings are too damn slippery.

I've probably been to the Huntington Hills firehouse subs (by T&T) ten times since they opened late last year and have consistently enjoyed it.

Just a reminder that Saks is owned by the Bay, so they’re also going to be liquidating. And, if you have gift cards, you have until April 6 (IIRC) to use those, and you probably don’t want to order things online.

I am a fan of crab but the only thing I can think of when I read that name is turning that b upside down. Terrible (intentional?) marketing.

I imagine that place had a healthy supply of homeless creating a culturally uplifting atmosphere in it. I don’t know how convenience store employees do it. First day I’d be out like Kramer in that masturbation episode.

Or you might try seeing their humanity, leading with compassion, that sort of thing.

I actually lobbed that one up waiting for one of those and you knocked it out of the park. Nice!
