Three blocks! Man, that walk must have been uphill in three directions to make it untenable.

They were long blocks. The struggle is real.

And they are all long term leases where you don't own the land the home is on.

You also have to say a land acknowledgement every day when you get home from work before going inside.

Didn't a whole bunch of people lose their homes a few years back in that area when they decided not to renew the leases?

I'm not sure but that would be the main downside of a long term lease instead of outright ownership.

I know this is a joke but it is in poor taste. Try not to #### on our indigenous community like this please.

I doubt that ever happened. The leases are typically 75 to 99 years long. You also pay them a lease payment every month.

Redwood Meadows, the University District, your mom all have similar agreements.

Actually this did happen on the Siksika reserve out by Gleichen. There was a golf resort community there in the river valley that was destroyed during one of the floods. Instead of wanting to rebuild, all the cabin owners there lost everything when the band took the land back and had no recourse.

or your mom

Yeah, but it didn't happen in the area Johnny Makarov is thinking of.

Isn't Redwood Meadows long term leases as well?

Well does it matter where it happened? it happened. I guess if it's anything longer than 50 years it wouldn't affect much.

Houses at Redwood Meadows were definitely selling at a discount when it looked like the lease wasn't going to get renewed. It has been renewed now and they have another 70+ years, but I think you have to consider that at renewal you might just be out of luck. That's quite different than the University District, where on expiration if the University doesn't renew they have to pay fair market value of the improvements (vs just getting them for free at Redwood Meadows).

Obviously it depends on the exact terms of the lease, but I'd want a pretty substantial discount for dealing all of that.

Tsuu Tina have a history of being reliable, I'm sure nobody's going to be making leases with the Siksika anymore.
