Probably not just luck. If you're a young millionaire looking to live a high life, not a lot of better places for it than New York. All the entertainment you could possibly want, while enjoying a relatively low public profile.
I would imagine it's just harder to keep players focused on personal development and team cohesion there, and I would imagine all big US metropolies to some extent attract the kinds of players who would rather have hockey just be their day job.

Hanifin also pretty much strong-armed to only be traded to Vegas
So there's a double whammy here. The "have" teams get the advantage of being a destination, and the "have not" teams get worse return on their players.

My son got a Panthers hat for his birthday. I asked him why he wasn't going to wear it to school this morning. He shook his head no vehemently and wouldn't say why, so I said "Too many mouth breathing coiler fans at school that act arrogantly and take things too far?". He nodded and I said I totally get it.

I've been actively trolling and dancing on graves all series, but especially this one.
Memes galore to my Oiler fan friends, posting on socials these same memes to rub it in. Cheering loudly and actively at any non Oiler goal when in public, especially at the rink when watching my kid play or practice.
And my personal favorite, this whole series I've worn my favorite shirt. The pure looks of disdain and disgust I get, in addition to outwardly and actively cheering against them, has been fuel to my soul. It's so bad that my wife doesn't sit with me at my kid's games anymore.
Everybody seems to ask me why I can't cheer for "Canada's team". B1t¢h please, they aren't Canadas team. I'll admit, they have 2 amazing players, but they're surrounded by a bunch of plugs, 2 Swiss cheese goalies, and topped off with 3 punchable faces in the literal Locker room Mother Effer, child support loser Kane, and Let's get walked like a low div peewee Walman.
As much as I want maximum pain and a double OT loss in game 7 on their ice, I think I'd just rather it be done tomorrow.

i had to take my son to a ball hockey game yesterday - so i wore one of my panthers tee shirts.
tons of glares but no one really says much. i did get a sarcastic "nice shirt" followed by a quiet scoff. i replied, "so do you like it... or LOVE it?!??!" just got snarl and they walked away.
my son's coach's wife was wearing a pissy t-shirt. she wouldn't even look at me in the change room. ha! ha!
such a fickle fan base

That doesn't mean Florida doesn't get credit for building a great team. They have made a ton of really savvy and smart decisions.
But is their location an advantage? Of course it is. A minor one? No way.
Tkachuk certainly didn't put Winnipeg on the list of teams he would re-sign with did he?

I think this is the point though... look at the diversity of the locations you're listing together (low tax / 'good' weather with high tax / 'bad weather' with high tax / 'good' weather). Players make choices for a myriad of reasons, so the 'hot weather' is a positive for some but doesn't move the needle for others. New York and Miami are pretty different, so listening them together just proves that diversity.
Or with Marner, posters were suggesting San Jose is a good fit because young players and a good place to raise family. I guess then taxes are not so important anymore (?).
I think it's fine to list 'advantages' but they're all of different magnitudes (including zero) for different players... so hard to point to them as meaningful unless you know the player personally imo.

I should have ordered a Panthers shirt last year, dammit, would have been so fun to wear. If they close it out this week will definitely order to enjoy this summer.

That's because you were only wearing a shirt.

Sure but it isn't pretty obvious that some markets, for a myriad of reasons, are considered attractive destinations and have an easier time recruiting and retaining players? We can all name them: LA, San Jose, Anaheim, Las Vegas, New York, Florida.

Yup. Especially Vegas and Florida. NYC always attracts the Russians for some reason. SJ was a popular spot for older players because it's low key and has nice communities. LA and Anaheim I think are less popular now because they don't have a tax advantage, aren't especially nice and/or require big commutes from nicer areas.

Agreed. Buff's stats above worry me. Well not the stats, the fact that it's not over despite being so tilted in Florida's favour worries me. Whenever a team "hangs around" things can go wrong suddenly.

Which is why teams like Calgary need to take on the cap hit risk to avoid the NMC provisions to get deals done.

NMCs don't help enough because if the player doesn't have sufficient protection they just make sure it's known they have no intent of re-signing with the other team.

On the other hand a lot of these young, rich athletes have young, rich athlete/actress/model wives which makes LA, Anaheim, and NY defacto landing spots.
A market like Calgary pretty much has every disadvantage in the book, plus some of their own making.
