Don't love trading with Vegas. But it's making Oilers fans lose their minds, so that's worth it.

My displeasure with the trade is entirely about the end result being Vegas when the answer should have been anyone but Vegas.

The speculation about how good it could have been is not the problem. Trading Andersson to Vegas feels like a betrayal.

I don’t mind the trade at all. Once it was clear an extension couldn’t be worked out with other teams (Boston being a good example), Conroy was likely operating under the reality that this was the best deal available without one.

I also don’t think this same offer would have been on the table last year. Andersson was struggling, and at that point the return probably would’ve been closer to a first-round pick and a B-level prospect. Getting more than that now reflects a rebound in value and better timing.

As for Abram Wiebe, while he isn’t a blue-chip prospect, he’s a legitimate project with a real NHL path (from what I have read, with quick google search), and the additional draft picks give the Flames more chances to land an impact player. That matters in a retool or rebuild where volume is key in addition to quality.

The reality is that Calgary was unlikely to come away with a top-10 pick or a true impact forward unless an extension was in place with Andersson—and based on rumoured reports, the contract he was seeking was at a very high price and he really wants to test free agency. Given those constraints, this return makes sense.

As someone who didn't like the trade, i'm hoping Conroy and the scouting staff can pull off some magic in the draft.

The return is probably fair. Whatever. But, have we not seen this movie before? Time to start dealing with pending UFAs the year prior. Blake Coleman needs to be moved now.

Andersson was playing like crap last year. We have zero idea what he could have brought.

And you likely can't fire the owner.

I don't like the return, but it's a little better than I first thought, and I assume it's the best Conroy could get for a rental.

There is no condition on the 2026 1st round pick anymore. It was originally a 2025 1st round pick if it was available because Vegas had plans to trade it, and they did, so the Flames wound up with the VGK 2026 1st round pick.

Now they have Vegas' 2026 1st round pick and their 2027 1st round pick and their 2028 2nd round pick which could become the 2028 1st round pick.

Also this trade improves our chance of being a lotto team. Which was the point you made 125X in the past few months

We also have 5 of the first 65-70 or so picks this year, and assuming we suck next year, 5 of the first 65-70 or so then too.

The regular passengers on the Calgarypuck bitch about Conroy clown car are getting their licks in tonight. After months of bitching about how the key was to trade Rasmus and the other assets and that the return does not matter they can now pivot to bitching about the return and about how Conroy should have got more. Optionality is important in life.

On many occasions you said you didn't care about the return you just wanted him traded.

Would love to know what the difference was between a retained Andersson and not. Seems like a waste of a retention spot especially when you’re depreciating your own asset (Vegas’ 2026 1st) with this trade.

I think what makes it even harder these days is that nothing is secret anymore. Andersson and other players hear the same rumours as everyone else. If he prefers to play somewhere like Vegas and knows that they are interested, why would he sign on long term somewhere else if he knows he can probably join them in a few months?

I think for sure teams like Vegas leak the information to insiders in order to influence players. It's basically tampering but with extra steps to launder it enough that nothing can be done about it.

Anyway, I don't think the deal is bad. I could easily see Vegas taking a step back by the end of next season and that 1st becoming mid round pick.
The answer was move him at 2024 trade deadline, learned nothing from Hanifin deal.

Yes - he was a cap dump that we did not seem to get paid for. It only makes sense if we flip him in order to get value back.

While there’s hyperbole in “worst trade in years” (losing Tkachuk for spare parts, Hanifin) the message here is right. If Conroy was my direct report and he fumbled a huge sellers market last TDL and this is the best he could do? It wouldn’t be a firing but one more mistake and he’d be seeing the door.

Just remember Brain Burke helped develope the program at athabasca university that you can take that basically helps show you what being a GM is like. I think it accepts 6 or 8 people a year. MBA in hockey. So go do the course and then get a job with the flames and show us how it’s done.

It happened, not the return we wanted and Andersson screwed us on the way out. It happens. Let’s see what other deals he makes and how this team finishes the year.

So many god damn fair weather fans. I’m sure if there was a better deal he would
Have taken it. If Rasmus said he ain’t extending at all, then I mean a bunch of teams were prolly pulling offers because they only wanted to pay the price needed if they got to extend him.

It happens, let’s not trash our GM who has dealt with a crap deal since he got hired. He’s managed to put us in a good spot going forward, let the man cook.
