There are many moves every year at the deadline. It's a great time to move players. There are typically multiple arms races among contenders at the deadline. Players like Backlund, Hanifin, and Lindholm would be highly sought after.

The bigger issue becomes if Calgary is in or competing for a playoff spot, what do you do?
With the trade deadline, lots of the moves are depth players,

Agreed for sure, if the Flames are in a playoff spot, they simply don't move the assets.

Which makes an even bigger issue,

This is a tough spot, they can't sell low, however they definitely need to move the assets (i.e. Hanifin)

I think another trade window will open up after free agency. Teams will miss out on targets or have more cap space from players leaving. The important thing is for Conroy to make a good deal, there was no good deals offered thus far.

I didn’t say that.

But the player holds most of the power, and there is a ticking clock.

Saying teams blew it is a bit premature.

I’m shocked more offers aren’t coming in for Hanifin. #### UFA market, relatively young, high pick, and a two way dman. He’s the only one available. I’d love if Columbus offered their next years pick unrestricted. They’re still going to be poop. Would love to get a top 8 pick.

It will never be an unrestricted pick. Teams don’t do that anymore.

Good for Connie, get the right trade, don't settle. Never know what can happen in the next couple months.

Most of the article is very Hanafin-focused.

Some teams will panic after free agency when they are left without the players they had targeted.

Waiting this out will only work in Conroy's favour.

I was talking about this in the trade speculation thread - I think that patience is probably the only real option now. Is there a risk that something bad happens before we can trade either of them? Sure is.

GMs were completely infatuated with this year’s draft. They didn’t want to trade the lottery ticket that could be a big winner…but the fact is that a player like Hanifin or Lindholm would be the kind of players that a team would dream that almost any draft pick would become.

I hope Conny is willing to do whatever it takes to maximize return - take a draft pick in 2024, take a moderately bad short term contract, or retain some salary. The biggest thing to get a good return might be just to wait for the market to rebound…probably once teams realize that free agency won’t solve their problems and the shiny draft picks that they took won’t be ready for 3 years.

He’s got 6 or 7 months to slow play things. Trade deadline will get hairy if the Flames are still in the hunt.

Little wrinkle… Hanafin’s NTC kicks in on Saturday. So if Conroy wants to utilize all of his options, there may be pressure to make a deal in the next 24 hours.

You probably realize if we dump hanifin, lindholm and Backlund we most likely are also going to be garbage.

That's good. Conroy needs to send message that we not rushing now. And let others know that our pending UFA prices got higher now. Now we need a real blue chip prospects because 2024 draft pick value is lowest during of season.

And other teams for sure try to make trade during offseason, as they should want their new players adjust into the new situation as smooth as possible and want they perform right beginning of season.

So we need try to trade after free agent, then before season but add your asking price higher and higher until trade deadline.

Definitely think he's pressuring interested teams before Noah's NTC kicks in.

I believe his NTC is for only 8 teams so that isn’t that restrictive.

I think Hanifin and his agent will need to be partners in making a deal regardless. I expect any team that will pay any real return will want some assurance that Hanifin will be at least open to signing long term in the near future.

Hanifin's NTC kicking in is irrelevant IMO.

Max value for Hanifin is if he signs an extension for the acquiring team. Teams he will sign an extension with will be the ones he will waive for.

edit: besides Hanifin's 8 team NTC kicked in last season.
