I think he will move well before training camp. The landscape will be a little clearer after the first few days of UFA signings and it opens up the potential for a sign and trade.

Would of liked to see deals done and good value coming back but apparently it wasn't there.

Not sure how lowball we're talking, but if the offer for example was duclair+3rd I'd rather just have hanifin play the season out then walk.

Respect conroy for not caving.

No official offer from Florida has been put out by any insiders. I think Trent is just assuming the offer that Zito gave them wasn’t good

To paraphrase a quote from the previous GM, when other GMs think you are drowning they will throw you anchors instead of a lifejacket.

I'd like to trade them as much as anyone - but now that the draft is done, pressure is off IMO. Other teams blew it if they wanted him so bad.
Not sure how they blew it, 2023 drafts picks now off the table.

Calgary still has a ticking clock. At some stage the UFA’s to be may simply say they will test the UFA waters and not negotiate with the acquiring team, lessening the return.

So solution is to just give them away?

Can still trade him at the trade deadline. Lots of time and if we're not getting the offers today, better off to wait.

Not a great plan to hold the assets till the deadline

team's won't have space, and teams to deal with will be reduced...

Obviously if the offers are not there, what can the Flames do

However the pending UFAs should be moved during the summer for sure.

Owen Pickering is in the wheelhouse of player I would want back for Hanifin. I don't know prospects or this player specifically, but. A former 1st rounder d who is close to NHL ready, could step into a top 4 role soon, or now, that's a decent return. Duclair is not. Another middle 6er winger would be a failure. He can probably be had for free. There's likely other wingers of his talent or better that are near free.

I'd wager Duclair and Kodak Black giving your mom the business.

His numbers are not exactly exciting

It is pretty hard to understand how a player would go to his new team and leave it so much weaker than it was before his new team gets him.

Dubois would be on a better team in 2024-25 had he just played out the year with the Jets or not sign his extension with the Kings or anyone else. That team would not give up a 23 year old rising star or a Tofolli level guy on a 4x2 contract and a past 1st round pick that has been delayed

How much better would LA be with Vilardi and Dubois on the team?

Which team does Hanifin want to play on? One with Lundell on it or one without? If he wants the best chance of success on his likely final contract he just burns this last year and picks Florida as a UFA.

The simple, and possibly best plan for him, is to say he wants to play this year with the Flames and expects to bounce back to his 2021-22 level.

I actually think Backlund and Tanev could have the most value at the deadline. Hanifin is a toss up but I don't think he does much worse than Pickering and 24 1st if the Penguins are in the playoff race. The most dangerous part about it is if the Flames trade them lol

Falls right in line with what I heard about the market being terrible. Good on Conroy for standing his ground and being patient.

Cap space becomes less of a thing at the trade deadline, as you pro-rate the cap hit the amount of games left in the year, and many teams acquire space via LTIR. You can always take back a junk expiring contract.

There are many moves every year at the deadline. It's a great time to move players. There are typically multiple arms races among contenders at the deadline. Players like Backlund, Hanifin, and Lindholm would be highly sought after.

The bigger issue becomes if Calgary is in or competing for a playoff spot, what do you do?

Hanifin's contract and potential retention makes him very easy to fit in.

Not overly enamoured with Pickering based on draft assessment and numbers. Would hope to have more coming back. That being said, I don't know much about him and he's still young.

Sure, the player doesnt even matter to me, that's Conroy's job, just find their own version of Pionk from the Trouba trade. Let the other teams talk to Hanifin's agent to make it easier.

If the offers they are getting are low-ball offers, I’m sure they can net better during trade deadline rather than trading Hanifin now.

That's one way to ignore many of the various factors involved for a simplified angle.
